    From the Houston Chronicle:

    Rockets summary

    Strange bird

Yao Ming did not hear the taunts in Dallas on Saturday night, but he did not like hearing about them a day later.

On several occasions during Saturday's game at American Airlines Center, announcer Billy Hayes pronounced Yao's name with a mock Chinese accent. When the Rockets center would score, Hayes would say Yao's name without using an accent, as he does with every opposing player. However, when Hayes announced several fouls, he seemed to be mocking either Yao's Chinese background or his accent.

"I didn't hear it, or I wasn't listening to him," Yao said. "If I heard it, I think I would have some thoughts. Right now, I'm not too happy.

"There are all kinds of people out there. It's a big world. There are lots of branches on the tree and many kinds of birds."

Asked what sort of bird would feel the need to make fun of where he is from, Yao said, "It's a new type of bird. I've never seen it."

Well I have sent my letter of protest and I would encourage anyone else that feels strongly about this to do so as well. Let it be known that I don't have a personal issue with it, but the fact that it bothered Yao Ming, I am throwing my support in for him and the entire Rockets organization because that's what true fans do.

i sent something but noted that it was idiotic for a "international" team like the mavs to make such a flunderbuck.

Yes, I too recognized that they are very much an international team and even mentioned it in my email and that they would condone such behavior from Hayes.

Did anyone actually hear what Billy Hayes said? I keep seeing the same guy post this on message boards but no one has actually heard or noticed Billy Hayes doing it during the game. I would think someone would have started a thread about it immediately or even posted it someone in the 13 page Mavs - Rockets game thread if they noticed it.

I didn't watch the game (knew we'd be blown out). Probably, the Houston Chronicle could give you an authoritative answer to that question, since they were the ones who published an article mentioning it.

I understand that some guy at the newspaper believes that he heard a mock accent but I was wondering how noticeable it was. If it was blatant, surely someone on this board heard it too.

I saw the game on tv and didn't notice it. However, the thing is you would have to be in the arena to hear that. When the announcer says who scored or who got a foul, that's very hard to hear on tv because the commentators are talking.

This board had a few fans go to the game, Mavs boards had fans go to the game and other message boards had users that attended the game and no one has said anything about it. It appears to me like the only guy that heard it was the Houston Chronicle guy. Even Yao didn't hear it.

I am not calling the guy a liar but I think he might be exaggerating a little or he might be mistaken.

all i know is from hear-say. but some have said that when wang zhi zhi suited up for them, and he did anything, they said you could hear a buddist gong banged in the backround anytime he did something.

if thats true, combined with these accusations....one has a pretty classless organization on their hands.

This is the response I just got...Pretty interesting...

"it didnt happen. We have checked every available record and person at the event, and the announcer denies having done it, and not a single person at the event mentioned it during the game, including all the asian reporters there to cover Yao, or anyone from the Rockets

we are trying to find out why the reporter seems to be the only one who heard it"

    thanks !

    m

Check out a Mavs game for 5 bucks upstairs or 30 bucks downstairs. Info on www.dallasmavericks.com

Love him or hate him, you gotta respect Mark Cuban's work ethic. The guy personally speaks with all 18,000 fans in attendance to make sure they didn't hear anything. Now that's impressive.
