as long as can remember i always thought dream started the fadeway. 96' was the first time i ever saw jordan use it consistently . but now when ever someone does a fadeaway all i ever here is that, that was jordan's move.

Let me suggest that you look at some Rox footage from ohhh lets say, 92. You know back when every play for Jordan was:

Jordan at the top of the key. The lane has been cleared. Drives right. Foul on Jordans defender, two freebies for Jordan.

I think that is because Dream's shot, although a fadeaway jumper, was labeled the baseline jumper. (or the turn-around baseline jumper, or better yet THE DREAM SHAKE) [IMG]

Karl Malone has been doing a 'fade away' shot for longer than both, I'd venture to say.

Also, Larry Bird shot a lot of turn a round fade aways...

But, out of the two you listed I think Hakeem had his 'Dream Shake' before Jordan used his fadeaway as his main weapon, but mainly because he didn't need to fade away.

    I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem.

People have been doing the fadeaway since Hakeem and Jordan were little kids!

All you do is fall backwards and shoot! Believe me somebody did it once!

It's not an invention or anything.

If you want to say though, who perfected it, I would say Hakeem. Jordan's fadeaway isn't his marquee move, instead it's his air reverse(up and under).

Bernard King had a sweet fade before both
of them, it was money.I liked Dreams fade
away more than Jordans though, because he
usually ads more moves to it.

    Brahma...Relax dude. I wasn't hagging you.

Dreamer...I thought Malone developed his fadeaway in the last 4-5 years.

Benard King...Now thats a name that takes me back. Shame the guy had some bad wheels. Could of been a great one.

Didn't Jordan perfect his fadeaway when he found he couldn't drive the lane and dunk on people forever, ie, after his leaping/penetrating skills started to deteriorate and he needed a consistent jumper?

Anyway, who cares... like Grummett said, the fadeaways been around a lot longer than Jordan or Dream's been using it.

My 7th grade basketball coach started the fadeaway. At least for me. While my jumping and running skills were far from deteriorating at that point in my career, he told me my natural elevation was not progressing as fast as the other forwards. My elevation spurt was two years away. He said I was not returning to the 8th grade team, unless I learn a fadeaway to get spacing from the defender. The basketball machine known as Galesburg in the cornfields of Illinois simply does not invest coaching in short players who can't get off a shot.

So, I started jumping away from the basket on my shot. I eventually learned a high release to go with it (after watching McHale at Minnesota). And was able to play PF at 6'0" in HS and get off my shot. Classic cornfield learning...you shoot about 500 shots a day by yourself.

Man...nearly every team we played had guys shooting fadeaways. Let's see...that was over 20 years ago when my coach taught me to jump away from my defender.

The renowned "fadeaway shot" has indeed been around long before either MJ or Dream arrived. Who started it? I have no idea, could be King, maybe Wilt, but its no doubt been altered and improved over the years.

I think Brahma may have been actually referring to who invented the move that involves a fadeway, but before that a little fakin' and shakin' is involved. This move has become popular thanks in large part to Hakeem and Michael. Of course, Dreams' is called the "the dreamshake", and I do believe he is the one that started, while Jordan popularized it to a whole new level where only the marketing genius that is he can do. But of course, I'm sure the millions watching Dream do it in the process of humiliating the Admiral and Shaq helped its popularity a bit [IMG]

An interesting note on fadeways, most coaches -- the ones I've encountered anyways, detest them, unless you can nail 99.9 % of the time. This is truer for centers and forwards, because obviously when you fade back, you are reducing your chances of grabbing a potential rebound through following up on your shot and basically taking yourself out of the play. I also recall reading something to that effect in Dream's autobiography, where he describes how he drew moans and groans from Bill Fitch when he first started practising it (I'm sure old Fitch must really feel bad now, not that being the all-time losingst coach doesn't [IMG])

depends what u lookin at. Jordan's fade away was beautiful because it seemed to be the last shot of alot of games. he also seemed to be able to hang up there when he jumped back to do a fade away. malone just jumped and sanked. i think more people looked at the beauty of Hakeems feet work.... his grace before he even did the fade away....

How could I forget David Thompson As a Rockets fan who moved to Raleigh David Is the best player ever to play college BBall in my mind. Leading NCSU to that 1974 championship.
I still went for Clyde's Cougars when he brought them up to NC State the other year. To bad he got thrown out of that game and they went on to loose just like they did in '83.
