I may be in the minority, but this dude has done an insane amount of changes in Houston policy, and I'm not a fan at all. First: Changed the town to non-smoking. I loved the fact that when he went to Bellaire's mayor to push him into it, he didn't budge, stating it was a "private property" issue. Kudos to Bellaires mayor for that. Second: He's made the HPD ticket-takers. I've grown up in this city my (mostly) entire life. HPD was about serious crimes. You had DPS, and smaller cities bothering folks with ticketing nonsense. But thanks to White, crime has risen, and we now have HPD doing the same bull**** we've seen in every other podunk town where there are speedtraps and other nonsense. For the love of Christ, I was pulled over by HPD for a tail light being out! Believe me, I've talked to people in HPD. That never happened before White. I'd really like to hear a good argument for him. Other than the Katrina thing, I really hate the man, and I've locally voted democrat since Lanier. Seriously, what has this man done, other than try and fill gov't coffers?
the crime thing has more to do with the fact that when white took office HPD was already in a manpower shortage, then between 03 and 04 we had about 700 or more cops retire.. which is a ridiculous number (usually its around 200) and there hasn't been any money to bring in replacements quick enough.. add in the fact that houston keeps growing so fast.. and well.. there ya go. too many people + not enough police. it has nothing to do with the fact you got a ticket or can't smoke, fatz.
I'm really tired of his "Things that annoy me" legacy. I haven't liked the guy since he denied e ever smoking pot in debates before his first election, then backpeddaled. dude was about to get get called out on his lie, so he turned on the PR spin machine, and cmailed he lied because he hadn;t had a chance to talk to his daughter about drugs yet. if this was the case, there would be no need to lie. he could have just elected to not give a formal answer until he could talk to his daughter. dude flat-out lied and got caught.
Bill White might be the only politician I actually like. As for the smoking thing...it was coming no matter who was in charge. It's happening in major cities all around the world.
and what about that crazy anti-begging campaign? If you personally think that peopel should donate to shelters and nto directly to the homeless, that's nice and fine. BUT I don't need the coty telling me how to donate, and I certainly don't need my tax money spent on radio commercials telling me what to do with my money. the commeericals were also incredibly offensive. they were something like "many homeless people have mental problems and drug and alcohol addictions.". True, BUT the same came be said about just about ANY group of people. The commercials could have said "Many people that live in River Oaks have metnal issues and drug and alcohol addictions" and it would have been just as true.
So basically fatty doesn´t like White because HPD has written him some tickets due to his poor driving and he can´t fill innocent bystanders lungs with 2nd hand smoke. Also, wrong forum.
It also annoys me that this dude isn't even a Houstonian. he lives in Kingwood. I don't care if Kingwood got annexed. Kingwood is the suburbs and NOT Houston.
This really bothered you? Do you think that having vagrants all over the city is a positive? It looks like **** and I couldn't think of a better way to help them than to help the people that help them. I've never lived anywhere where their are as many beggars as there is in Houston. I understand that it is a fact of life and I am all for helping them even if it is via government monies. The no smoking thing is fantastic to me and I hope that The Woodlands follows suit. I haven't checked to see if they will or not but man do I hope they do. I know little about the HPD thing and it doesn't effect me much since I rarely go to the city.
It absolutely bothers me when any level of government tells me what to do with my dispsoable income. It bothers me even mroe when they do wit with ads funded by my tax money. My opinion of the validity of the program if another issue, and I carwefully skated that in my response. Apparently you aren't too keen on reading comprehension.
