Someone posted some stats about Jordan in China's sina.com and said that in his prime Jordan's head could reach 15 cm above the rim. So I'm wondering, which player do you guys think has the biggest vertical leap, Steve, Vince, Mac, Koby? Does anyone of them jumps even higher than Jordan?
Are you using the measurement of above the rim or vertical leap? I think Steve or Kobe would have the biggest vertical leap since they are shorter than Vince or Tmac yet can get up and float in the air equally.
Dennis2112, Sorry, I should've made it clearer. I mean the absolute height one can reach. Can anyone of them touch the upper rim of the board?
Kobe is a taller than Vince and Jordan and only one inch shorter than TMAC. Also, Kobe never gets that high which is why he has problems finishing sometimes and gets blocked once a game. I would guess it would be a toss up between VC pre-injury and Francis. I've heard Francis has a vertical around 40".
I remember during the slam dunk contest a couple of years ago they were using some device to measure how far they got off the floor and Steve's consistently outmeasured Carter or McGrady's, but who knows how accurate that was.
Francis is the highest jumper out of them all. Next is Carter and then Jordan and I don't know who wins out of kobe and t-mac.
Obviously, some of you youngsters never did get a chance to see Jordan or Dominique in their hey day. Francis probably has a higher vertical because he is shorter, but i will debate with anyone who says any player today jumps or gets off the floor higher than Jordan,Dominique and a guy named Clyde. You need to recognize.
That would put Jordan's head 6 inches above the 10' rim. Since Jordan was 6'6", that would be a vertical leap of 48". Humm . . .
If going by maximum height, I'm pretty sure it would be McGrady. He seems to have a combination of height, long arms, and good hops. I remember him blocking Kobe's jumpshots in the 2001 allstar game. Kobe and Vince are probably close for second, and Francis would definitely be 4th. Francis probably has the best vertical though.
50" vertical leap is possible for a very good athlete. I won't doult MJ can have a verticle leap as 48"...
I think Steve's vertical has been measured in camps at either 42 or 43 inches. I did some searching and came up with Jordan's vertical leap coming into the league was 48". Don't know how true that is, but all I can say is his free throw line dunk had a pump on the way and that's just silly. lee you old fart, how could you forget Spud Web?! His vertical had to be around 45-50". Most long jumpers and high jumpers could outdunk any of these guys with some practice. So there.
From memory: Spud Webb - 52" Jordan - 42" Steve - (from the slam dunk contest machine) 42" Vince - (from the slam dunk contest machine) 41" Ralph Sampson - 36"@7'4" Walter Berry - 40" The measurement of Steve and Vince was done while they were running. The actual vertical leap is not done that way. Ralph was able to reach the top of the back board, as did Earl Mannigault.
A player for the Australian national team stated that Vince's vertical is 47 inches. Other sources have claimed a 43-45" range, Vince hasn't said himself what it is. Remember, in the dunk contest you don't have to jump as high as you can, its about putting the whole package together. So using those verticals isn't the best way to measure the highest players could jump. Francis had to jump as high as possible because he was the shortest. I still think of the Olympics when someone brings this up, I mean Vince jumped over that dude with like 2 steps, sick sick sick!
Forgot his name, but there was one streetballer that was reportedly able to take a dollar off the top of the backboard.
Vince Carter jumped OVER a 7-footer in the olympics. Hands down, Carter wins the jumping contest. Steve's hops sure are fun to watch though.
