At the moment there are a lot of great point guards in the NBA, but who is the best of them. At the beginning of the season I thougt it was Francis, but I have my doubts at the moment. Kidd and Payton are playing very good, I think better than Francis. But when Francis is playing without his migraine, he could be better. And there are also players like Marbury, Andre Miller, Nash and Baron Davis.........
Right now, Gary is the best. I'd rank Francis behind him, then Kidd. Francis would be a lot better if not for his various medical conditions.
Francis is a better individual player. But overall, Kidd is much better. In terms of making others around him better. I'm still wondering which Rocket relies on Francis to help them score. We lose games when he's gone because we miss Francis' scoring compared to Moochie's 6 pts a game or whatever. But I really saw no difference in the other player's games with or without Francis. I am hesitant to consider Francis among the elite at PG, until he shows me that he is able to make other players around him better.
Gary and Francis aren't pgs. Kidd and Andre Miller are. They're both great. gp and steve are great too, but not pgs.
What the hell are you talking about? Yes, GP shoots a lot, but he's anything but a SG. I could agree with you on Francis. But GP creates so many shots for himself and others.
Payton's the best. I wish he would get traded to another team. Its funny, you hear so little about the Sonics anymore, I almost forgot about Gary this season until I saw he made the Allstar team.
Moochie occasionally has his 20 pts, 7 assists games in Steve's absence. The Rockets still lose those though. Steve adds a lot more than scoring to any team (he was putting up close to 8 boards and 8 assists the last few weeks in addition to his 23 pts). But Jason Kidd is the best PG, with Payton next and Francis a little bit behing, followed by Andre Miller and Baron Davis.
Kidd not doubt. He can create and help others out. My second choice would be Mike Bibby. He's not that great but hell he's done better for Sac-Town then J-Dub.
Bibby's been horrible this year. I don't think there's a question about the top 3 - Payton, Kidd, and Francis. The queestion there lies in which order. I'd say Payton, Francis, Kidd myself. Beyond that, Andre Miller has to come 4th. He may well be better than all of them given talent around him. Then talent weakens into the good players who don't make their teams better - NVE, Marbury, etc.
top 10 PGs this year: 1. Kidd 2. Payton 3. Francis 4. Nash 5. Marbury 6. Miller 7. Davis 8. Bibby 9. Cassell 10. Van Exel
other Notables: Jamaal Tinsley Damon Stoudamire Rod Strickland Jason Williams Terrell Brandon...... any others?
I actually heard the "Gary's not a PG" remark yesterday on the Phil Jackson show. Philip was praising Kidd, "the best point guard in the league, and he has been for some time now". He noted GP and Andre Miller, too. He noted Gary was a great player, but not a trad. pg, more a "power guard", by which I think he meant he can use the post-up game, and his own firepower, to force openings for his teammates. That's not what Kidd does, or Stockton. The trad. pg is a playmaking surgeon, cutting up the opposition. That struck me as true. I'm a fan of GP, though - he's a hell of a player. I'd love to see him with Tim Duncan. He'd be awesome with Elton Brand and Odom and Q. I hope he gets to play with one more decent big man before he hangs it up. It's a pretty ok sunday radio show. p
While GP is great at posting up (prob the best post-up PG), he does penetrate a lot. It's like saying Olajuwon is not a center because he could shoot the ball from outside very well.
