i think it's gotta go to shane, regardless of the reputation ron ron carries around. although ron is more aggressive, shane is always up on his man and stays in front of him. plus all the communication he does to get the defense where it needs to be.

hayes brings good post defense, but a taller player with post moves can score on him at will because of the height advantage.

    i'd say

    shane
    ron ron
    hayes

Best perimeter 1 on 1 defender = Battier
Best post 1 on 1 defender = Chuck

chuck has tree trunks for legs. he's got my respect, wish he was 6'10 though, he'd be like otis thorpe. his height disadvantage is a liability, it doesn't help the fact that he has no offensive game. if it wasn't for his defense, he'd obviously be guarding someone in the CBA.

Battier is a good team defender. If it's a one on one situation, there is no better defender than Ron Artest in the entire NBA.

a lot of things shane does, doesn't show up on stats. he plays defense by keeping the opponent in front of him and takes less risks --> less steals. He also attributes to a lot of help defense.

Shane plays defense at the highest level for 4 Qtrs. But if the game is tied in the 4th I want Artest on the ball handler or whoever is taking the shot. When Ron is concentrated on defense when it's really needed, he's a beast.

i don't know, he takes a lot of chances. roy wouldn't have scored that last second shot either against shane, or at least shane would have had a hand in his face.

That I really would agree 100%.

But this is also why I'm so glad we got the 2 best perimeter defenders on our team, we don't need to worry about that problem!!

Hayes has been shutting down a lot of people this season. When someone posts up Chuck, they cannot move him an inch cause he is so strong, and usually are forced into a turn around jumpshot. And just as they turn around and bring the ball up to shoot, Chuck would swap the ball away from them. IMO Chuck has the quickest hands in the entire league. He never goes for blocks because he know he can't get it, instead he just knocks the ball loose on its way up.

I have to say Ron Artest. He is stronger than Battier and I belive he is maybe a little bit more athletic and quicker. Don't forget that the ankle is still bothering him just a bit, so he can't play his best defense.

Battier is good at cooperate defence, not individual defence, and Ron is because of his strong body so he can defend Pierce, LeBron James and so on. Hayes is a pure defender, not an offenser, his offense can almost neglect.

I never see why no one nominates Alston (I mean he he's not the best but he's damn good too). Ever notice how Aaron Brooks gets torched sometimes? If he could D like Alston he'd be starting.

Tough to choose. Depends on the matchup.

Battier for chasing perimeter players around the court and fighting through screens for an entire game.

Artest for the bigger, physical shooting guards who like to drive and small forwards with post games.

Hayes for beating up small and power forwards in the post.

Overall, I'd have to go with Artest. Battier comes in a close second only because he has more trouble handling size.

It's amazing how much defensive talent we've got, BTW.

It's good to see that the poll is so close because it really is tough to choose. My order would be Hayes, Battier, Artest.

From what I have seen Ron is like Bret Favre. Spectacular at times but makes crucial defensive mistakes. Shane is like Joe Montana...just consistently good.

shane is the most consistent defender. ron is the most aggressive. chuck is the best post defender.

but if i needed to go to one player to get a stop on another perimeter player, it would be tmac. he slacks off most of the game but when he wants to be, he is a stellar defender. for proof, see the way he shut down dirk whenever he was on him in the 04-05 series. his knee has kept him from moving the way he needs in order to be that good defensively, but when healthy, he's got the ability to be an elite defender.

    yao ming.

Just for that one performance against Dwight Howard.

Tmac defense is top notch whenever he feels like playing it. If only....

I have to say Hayes is the best defender thou, every time a PF/C gets hot, RA puts Hayes in, and the player just stop scoring.

It's a tough call though I reckon my vote goes to Chuckwagon.

He's definitely earned my respect in spite of his height disadvantage, his non-offense contribution on the court, but he's tru warier!

Shane and Ron Ron are both better than anybody else in defense in the entire league,no doubt about it.I'm just glad we have 3 tops defenders at the same time. :)

Chuck Hayes. Anyone he defends has a huge height and/or speed advantage...... and they all FAIL

Ron has magical hands. When he touches the basketball even only with the tip of a finger, there is a great chance that he gets another steal.
