Do we have a single player that is good on offense and defense? Offense Only - No defense Brooks Martin Scola Yao (post-injury) Chase Miller Defense Only - Bad Offense Ish Lowry (offense has fallen off a cliff this season) Battier Hayes Hill Jeffries The closest two way player we have this season has been.... Ish Smith, an undrafted 3rd pg on this team. It could be that we just have a bad team, no amount of coaching, rotation changes, is gonna fix it this season.
According to Morey (and some fans on this board), there is no need for 2 way players, as long as you have 1 dimensional players on both sides of the ball we should be balanced.
Yao is offense only at the moment, he used to be a above average rebounder, which is now below average. And his defense has also regressed post injury. Hill has no offense, he has an inconsistent hook shot and can dunk near the basket, that is it. Lee has potential to be a 2 way player, so our best two way players are an undrafted 3rd string PG and a 3rd year backup SG.
Trugoy, Here is my list. Yao ming makes an impact on defense and offense. Offense and Defense Yao Ming(Blocking 2 shots a game in only 2 quarters and provides an interior presence if he plays) Offense Only - No defense Brooks Martin Scola Miller Defense Only - Bad Offense Ish Lowry (offense has fallen off a cliff this season) Hill Bad Offense - Bad Defense(Many of these guys were put in defense only, when they are not great at defense either.) Battier Hayes Jeffries Chase(offense has fallen off a cliff like Lowry, but he has no defense either)
Yao's rebounding rate is at a career high. He's grabbing 6.5 rebounds in 20 minutes of play, which is 11 rebounds in starter minutes. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mingya01.html
Ok, I can give you the Yao two way player, but his rebounding has taken a huge hit post injury, he is just not getting to rebounds he used to get to. I'd argue that Jordan Hill is just as much of a defensive presence as Yao is now taking into account rebounding.
Part of that is higher pace of the rockets compared to previous years, if you look at his TRB%, it's lower than his rookie year. But even given the small sample size, he doesn't pass the eyeball test, he is not getting to rebounds he would've gotten to in the past.
Lee, Yao when healthy and MAYBE Taylor? Everyone else pretty straight forward in excelling on either offense or defense.
