I can't believe that Bill Walton said Shaq should be NBA first team Center after the injury year he has had.

Must be a Yao Hater. With the numbers Yao has put up this second half he deserves to be all 1st team.

Two or three positions are pretty easy, IMO.

    Center - Yao
    1st forward - LeBron
    1st guard - Kobe

Now, as for the rest, Wade would take the other guard spot IMO, but you could make an argument as well for AI, Billups, or Nash of course; I personally think that Wade would the one guard (next to Kobe, of course) I would rather have in my backcourt if I composed an All-NBA team, so I pick him.

As for the other forward, a few could make an argument for themselves: Brand, Duncan, Nowitzki, Melo even may be. In this case, IMO, when in doubt always go with the player on the best team, so in this case it's Duncan once more, despite the fact that he hasn't had a stellar season personally, but his team is still easily on pace for 60+ wins.

Well I think an un-written rule is that a player has to be on a winning team to be considered on 1st team. So I would put Yao ahead of Ben into 2nd team, but I suspect he would be put on 3rd team since Ben is on a winning team.

IMO I can't believe Bill Walton thinks shaq deserves to be on the 1st team instead of Yao. Shaq has missed more time than yao, and the dominance Yao has showed this season has eclipsed shaq in the same timeframe.

he used to be a yao-lover, now he kind of hates him. Bill is probably having a fight with his wife.

Note that unlike the all-star teams, there is far less distinction between center and forward. In essence, the positional requirements are closer to the backups; both Jermaine O'Neal and Dirk Nowitzki have been selected as both Centers and forwards, while Amare Stoudemire.

Secondly, Team sucess plays a huge role in a First Team All NBA Selection. It's been a long time since a player from a losing team or team that doesn't make the playoffs has received the honor, longer than I care to research, but at least until '84-'85 (I stopped checking after this). Maybe Yao can break the trend, but I'm not hopeful.

    My First team would be:

    G - Steve Nash
    G - Kobe Bryant
    F - LeBron James
    F - Dirk Nowitzki
    C - Tim Duncan

Shaq and Elton Brand are also very strong possibilities to take a spot.

In my opinion, Yao has all the credentials of a second team All-NBA selection, such as Kevin Garnett last year, but not more, and could even be a 3rd teamer if Shaq pushes him off the second team. Yao's recent dominance has been outstanding, but this particular honor, much like the MVP has quite a bit to do with team sucess.

How anyone can not put Nash on the First Team is beyond me..

He is most probably MVP of the league again. With averages on 19 and 11 assists, leading the suns to their record without Amare - there should not be any doubt

Do you need to be on a winning, playoff team to be selected to the NBA 1st team?

That would be ideal, however, an exception should be made for Yao who is easily the best center in the league this season, I wouldn't be mad if he made 2nd team and Ben Wallace made first though.
