I have tried to come with the players on the roster that are the JVG type of player. In order for the team to succeed the roster must be made of players that the relate to what the coach wants to implement. The only the players I think are JVG type of players: 1. Yao 2. AG 3. MJ 4. JJ
I'm not sure why people are saying Yao; he's Van Gundy's star player, not a "Van Gundy Type." The Van Gundy Types that we have are: Cato Spoon J. Jackson M. Jackson Players that take out the trash, basically.
Mobley, Cato, Francis, Yao, JJ, MJ, Spoon, AG, MoT, Nachbar, Pike, Padgett. They just need one more season to gel and a few need to get over the hump.
Only three players on this team are JVG type players. 1. Adrian Griffin 2. Jimmy Jackson 3. Kelvin Cato Yao,Steve, and Cat are not his type of players becasue they are all soft, especially Yao. Calling Yao a JVG player is an oxymoron. Oakley,Mason.and Kurt Thomas are the typicall JVG players becasue they are fearless, relentless, dirty, and defensive minded. Yao on the other hand in none of the things mentioned and therefore is the complete opposite of a JVG player.
With JVG's expectations, there is no true JVG type player on the roster.. here's some that come close though: JJ Spoon Cato Mobley (to a lesser extent)
Agree with the list, disagree with the comments afterwards. It's an oversimplification to say that a JVG player is hard, period. As much as toughness, JVG looks for guys who use their heads, don't commit stupid turnovers or fouls, and who understand their role. Yao registers high on the first two, and increasingly high on the latter. Additionaly, he is probably our best fundamental player outside of maye Pike ( his propensity to bring the ball too low in the post notwhithstanding) and ANY coach loves fundamentals, because unlike talent, you can count on it.
i think Boki is too if he got the playing time,,, i think a jvg type player is one who plays hard on both ends for 48 minutes,,,but then again thats every coach
