We keep having these Francis comparison, so I thought I'd start one about Mobley. Let's start with quotes from the Kings game: and from Rudy concerning the Week honors. So, I've been thinking for awhile this year Cat reminds me of Iverson. Both have a chip on their shoulder. Both are dogged for playing "selfish" ball. Both have the quickest first steps in the game and concentrate first on seeing the opponents so they can "kill 'em". They are learning to see and use their teammates, to bring the real winning to the table. Iverson has had more experience doing it, but Cuttino is coming around. Another thing to consider is Larry Brown had to work very hard to get Iverson to come around. You can't take anything away from the man. I actually thought Brown was going to blow it, and not keep reinforcing that he is designing an entire offense around Iverson. I think Allen realized that the coach is giving him everything, and just wants some respect back. So, Allen matured. In Cuttino's situation, Rudy also realized he could design an entire offense around that first step, soft jumper and heart. But Cuttino has the chip on his shoulder from disrespect. Rudy is grooming just like Brown would, Doc Rivers and Lenny Wilkens, imo. Phil Jackson, Sloan and other Bobby Knight wannabe's would have killed his confidence. Rudy groomed it early, and so did Barkley. It is sad to me that had Cuttino got his Top 5 draft pick that he is close to proving he deserved, we would be arguing whether we like his game or not. We wouldn't be saying he sucks. It would be like how fans treated Iverson. They never said he sucked, just that he doesn't play winning ball and is selfish. Well, leave that winning ball to the coaches to build a system around. Brown and Rudy are definitely improving it with their systems. Cuttino = Iverson (although he'll never take as many shots to score Iverson's numbers, since we have Fat Lever/Francis playing with him). Chuck Person in his prime. Granted, the Rifleman was bigger and could play SF, but the confidence, swagger, and sweet shot are all there. In Person's prime, he went to the hole hard and had that beautiful pull up off the dribble. Ask Larry Bird. He also had a nice stepback move that I have seen a bit from Mobley too. Cuttino is quicker off the dribble, but I liken the two for the reasons above. Person was also a bit of a jokester from what I understand. I used to play pick up ball with a guy named John Potter. He played at OSU back in the early 90's. He said they were playing Auburn (1990 season I believe), and Chuck Person was at the early shootaround, throwing up bricks, hitting the back of the rim, side of the backboard, etc. He asked Potter if he wanted to shoot for money, Potter thought about it, said no. Person then said,"Good thing" and began hitting three after three, nothing but net.... ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness." heypartner -- i don't think even the biggest Cat bashers around have ever claimed that Cat "sucks." Many have been debating whether they like his game or not. ------------------
Joe Dumars with lots more emotion. Wondering if there will ever be a thread saying that: Cato == .70 * Ratliff or Cato == .65 * Mutombo Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Resistance is futile....you will be assimilated
Drazen Petrovic comes to mind for some reason. Deadly scorer who would attack the basket at will as well as light it up from outside when he was hot. Deemed by some to hold the ball too much and not pass enough. Iverson is good. I've made that comparison before. The thing is that Cuttino has never been asked to lead a team in the way that Iverson has. Iverson scores alot despite everyone knowing that he's the best, and sometimes the only, Philly threat. And he's a winner (Jerry Stackhouse attacks the basket and scores alot, too, but his team is brutal. Same for Larry Hughes). Plus Cuttino's crossover is nowhere near Allen's. Person to me was always a long-range gunner, more than a slasher and driver. I was going to say Abdul-Rauf, but he fit the same mold for the most part. ------------------
WOW, HOOP-T, Chuck Person!! NOW THAT'S A BLAST FROM THE PAST!! I remember him when he was at Indiana, stone-cold scorer. He could have been a Hall-of-Famer, but he never had quite enough talent around him and then he fell in love with the 3. But he could do it all, post up, drive, finish, hit the 3, pull up off the dribble, come off screens, you name it. Was he the one who used to slap his forehead or beat his chest when he was on a roll? As far as Mobley, I don't know who he's comparable to. I heard someone say he's a little like Ricky Pierce, but Ricky wasn't much of a 3pt shooter, I don't think he even liked the 3. With the long arms, wiry-strong build, and they way he finishes, maybe a smaller version of George Gervin? ------------------
You stole my thunder Mango! I was going to say a more energetic Joe Dumars, which is ironic since I consider Stevie another Isiah Thomas. ------------------ Meow!
I remember Vinnie coming off of screens and just popping from the outside. Driving and creating his own shot don't come to mind. Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! Resistance is futile....you will be assimilated.
I think that's why he called him an athletic Vinnie Johnson. They're both pretty streaky shooters. Thank you JR. Questioning Mobley has become worse than talking trash about other posters' moms. ------------------ www.swirve.com...The reason Al Gore invented the internet.
Hell let's go back to BUH-NARD KING? I think Cuttino is more athletic then Person and Dumars. But, nobody had the range of Chuck Person. I'm a little young, but what about George Gervin, minus 3 inches ?? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
Hydra, Please, no comparisons to Jordan. Cuttino is good, one of me favorite players on the Rocks, but don't try and throw him in there with Jordan. Just ain't right. But I really don't know who to compare him to. Matt Maloney maybe? j/k, well I guess an Iverson comparison would do. Also maybe Tony Delk, they just remind me of each other being so quick and having a nice shot. ------------------
Casey Jones ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
I really don't know who to compare Cat to. He's really a unique talent. Any lefties you would compare him to? I can't think of any, which makes him even more unique. ------------------
I actually think Iverson's closer than anybody else (although some of those were before my time). Although when I think about it, I think Mobley's game is harder to categorize even than Francis. he does play a lot like Iverson, but boards MUCH more and seems to be able to play as a complimentary player at times. I don't think Iverson ever could ------------------ Boston College - Big East -East Division Regular Season Champs Worst to First in 2001!
Skivv, Actually, I think that his style of game is very easily comparable to Jordan's. It is the level of his game that is different. But he does play a very similar style, minus some of the highlight reel dunks. ------------------ "We messed with the Bull, and we got the horns." -- Larry Brown "quote" from AirBullard.com
