Seeing the other music threads made me think about this.

I have 2 albums by Sonic Youth in "Daydream Nation" and "Dirty" and I just cannot get into either one of these albums. This is not the first time that I have had trouble "getting into" an album. I didn't care too much for "Animals" by Floyd at first and the same thing with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" by Wilco. But I was able to hear something on the 3rd or 4th listen with those 2 albums that I was missing before. Unfortunately, that has yet to happen with the 2 Sonic Youth CDs. I respect them and acknowledge their influence but I just cannot get into their stuff as of now.

Another one is Pavement. I only have one of their albums in "Slanted and Enchanted". I had heard that this WAS the Indie album of the early '90s. I have listened to it like 3 times and was bored senseless. Once again, maybe it will grow on me but as of right now, it has not.

So, let's hear it - who is someone or what band out there do you have an album/CD by that you just cannot get into?

I really dislike that retro 80's-ish stuff like Franz Ferdinand and the like. I grew up listening to the original stuff and didn't like that version either.

Jam bands like the Grateful Dead, Phisch, etc. I just am not interested in that stuff.

Pink Floyd. I totally respect them, particularly David Gilmour, but they just make me sleepy.

Agree with everything Jeff said. Jam bands bore the hell out of me. Walked out of a Rat Dog (members of Grateful Dead) concert after 3 songs. Bob Dylan opened for them, so it wasn't a total loss:cool:

Pink Floyd has a few songs that I like, but most of them are like easy listening music.

I'm sure there are others that I am forgetting.

Listen to "Animals" and that will change that perception forever.

The B-52s. I love 80s music, but I've always had a difficult time listening to them. When I hear Love Shack every time on 106.9, I always change the station. The guy who sings in the background is annoying.

Sonic Youth will rock yr world if you get the right albums and mood/mix to listen in.

    Try

    Bad Moon Rising
    or
    Evol
    or
    Sister

then try some early things like Confusion Is Sex or Halloween or Flower. Of course, it helps if you're loaded, or can get yr head that way. I never had to get loaded back in the day - it just came to me. Bad Moon is a head-rockin' album. EVOL is love backward - not just the spelling, sister.

    Daydream sucked, IMHO.

Dirty was ok for 100%, but the rest left me cold.

The Sonic shows I caught in Austin clubs 85-86 were some of the most rocking ever. Them and Redd Kross and the Ramones and X and Scratch Acid. Just superlative, mind-bending, backward-rocking cool.

Pavement is a little more fey but definately cool. Get yr head right. It's the mess yr after. Dive into the mess. Why is it so f...ed up ?
That's the problem you can wrap yr head around and grind yr teeth on.

More Sun Ra than Dave Brubeck.

I love jam-bands (especially live), but for some reason I've never been able to get into Phish. I keep trying, keep listening to live recordings, buying albums, but I just can't seem to get into it. I was always figuring that if I saw them in person, it would set me straight, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now. I like the GD, and the GD spinoff bands (like Rat Dog, Phil Lesh and Friends, etc.), and so many other jam bands (moe., DMB, String Cheese, The Big Wu, New Monsoon, etc.), but Phish still eludes me.

I do not understand Radiohead. The critics rave on and on about them. Everyone whose musical opinion I admire likes them. I like groups like Coldplay that resemble Radiohead. I have tried on multiple occasions to listen to OK computer and is sounds like nails on chalkboard.

Also, any country music artist in the last 20 years is painful to listen to.

    This is my list:
Radiohead- The fact that they are far too political for my tastes bothered me, but before "Hail to the Thief," I never could get into their music.
Any Top 40- I just don't understand why people want to listen to such drivel. By the way, I know that Jackyl is not good music, but I just put that in there to see if anyone was paying attention. Apparently they were.
Grateful Dead- They were the one jam band I've never found that tasty. Jamming for an hour in the same key is.....dull.
avante-garde jazz- I know it is not a group, but I have to include this genre. I'm enough of a musician to know what they are doing and how incredible it is, but is it aesthetically pleasing? No. In fact, it sounds like the soundtrack to insanity.
Pearl Jam:- Lemme see, Eddie can't sing (his awful vocal style inspired an awful legion of grrrrrrling posuers), the band is not what I'd call the most talented bunch of musicians and their music is very, very repetitive.
Smashing Pumpkins- Some of Billy Corgan's songwriting shows genius, but can I get over the fact that his vocals sound like an angry 13-year old? No.
Kiss- Way too much merchandising, pathetic songwriting (with a few exceptions) and just plain dreadful muscianship. It's the pro wrestling of rock and roll. I never have understood Kiss fans and likely never will. Maybe it is the stage show they enjoy?

It took me a long time to get into Sonic Youth! I bought one album, Washing Machine, and didn't really like it. After about a year I tried listening to it again just for the heck of it and I really got into it.

I now have every one of their CD's since Daydream Nation, which actually is pretty good, but not the easiest to get into. People consider it one of their most influential albums.

Their latest, Murray Street, is pretty easy to listen to. I definitely recommend it if you want to get into them. It made some top album lists last year too.

For me- the newer Radiohead stuff, although in concert it was very good. Also Dave Matthews Band, which I got into briefly but not anymore.

Good one. I don't get them either.

Hey, bama. Maybe you should clarify "top 40." It is much different today than it was 20 years ago. People like Norah Jones can top that chart as well.

    The Strokes.

I like a lot of music you could consider in that genre, but The Strokes never did anything for me. Way overrated IMHO.

We have been through this several times but Coldplay is nothing like Radiohead other than they both play their own instruments, write their own songs, and are from England.

Saying they are close to being the same is like saying that REM and Husker Du are similar because they are both post-punk bands from the US. Sorry for the rant but this is a myth that has been perpetuated by music critics and it is simply not true. Sorta like that the Strokes are going to be saviors of rock and roll music....yea, right:rolleyes:

I really like all the indie retro 80's (crap) that is out right now Interpol, Franz, the Killers, Rapture, but I know i'm going to hate it in about year.

I have a lot of friends who *love* all the jam bands and it drives me up a wall ~ can't stand it and i have trouble even having much respect for it musically (not including the grateful dead).

Hmmm let's see specific artists I could never get into...
Dave Matthews, Alice in Chains, Motley Crue, Guns & Roses, Tupac, Ben Harper, Liz Phair, Metallica, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc...
