i'm posting this in the GARM because you may think a rocket deserves to be on the list...

imo, there are only two players in the entire nba that are literally impossible to defend one on one.

    1) tracy mcgrady

    t-mac has the complete package:

    can finish left or right
    posts up smaller defenders
    blows by bigger, slower defenders
    passes well
    extraordinary body control
    explosive finisher

    2) dirk nowitski

7'0" and can handle the ball like a guard
rolls off of physical play well
    great range
    can post up
    can pass well

i'll go ahead and address two names i know will come up:

    a) kobe - nope. why? because kobe's outside game is inconsistent. the best defense against kobe is to let him shoot from outside. once he starts penetrating, it's over, but you can contain him by forcing him to shoot jumpers.

    b) shaq - nope. why? IF, and i say IF, you are strong enough to keep him off the low block, he's containable. olowokandi does it. hakeem did it.

    post away............... :)

    1. T-Mack all the way. That guy is sometimes underrated because of the Kobe hype.

    2. The diesel - I would have made him my number one but he is most effective only after wearing his opponent down. Then after he turns into a freaking monster.

    3. Kobe.

well, if you are talking about "defending one-on-one," no one can stop Iverson.

On a second thought - this thread belong to the NBA Dish not this forum.

Anyway, Marbury has to be in the top ten somehow. That guys is freaking unstopable and awesome. Maybe it is the Balle class he took last year - no kidding.

sorry verse... i have to say shaq.

i was the biggest shaq hater until i saw his second game against yao...errr...yaoouch.

the guy can put of 25+ 15+ on an average day and go above that whenever he want's to.

the other guys that you listed are only unstoppable because the whine and moan to the refs so much that they get referee favortism (sp?). well... maybe not mcgrady.

about your olowakandi line... well... if shaq went up against him with the same mentality that he did against yao....if shaq went up against anybody with the same mentality that he did against yao, nobody can stop him.

the only thing that can stop him is his toe and cheeseburgers.

I'm not sure that Dirk gets the superstar calls yet. He gets beat the heck up sometimes without getting a whistle, whereas Kobe would be shooting free throws.

That's a good call. One-on-one, Iverson's quickness will get it done every time.

T-Mac is pretty amazing too. And Shaq is unstoppable. When he wants to be.

Like when he made 12 threes in one game? His 3 point% was .003 worse than McGrady...nope, I'd say that Kobe is deadly from anywhere on the court.

Olowokandi? The same Olowokandi that plays for the Clippers? The same Clippers against whom Shaq averaged 35 points on 58% shooting? Olajuwon didn't exactly play all world defense on Shaq, either. They played to a stand still in the finals...

No player is "impossible" to defend, but I'd say the hardest player to defend is Iverson...dude is lightning quick and probably works around screens better than anybody in the league...Some of those layups he tosses up make you scratch your head...

Interesting post Verse i happen to agree with you, but playing devil's advocate here much like Kobe couldn't you back off Mcgrady since his jumper is as consistent as Kobe's...i mean they did shoot practically the same percentage in both FG% and 3pt% this year

    1) Shaq. Not even close. It's so frustrating to watch the Lakers hoping they will lose, because Shaq can't be stopped.

    2) Nowitzki. What do you do with a 7 footer who dribbles the ball down court, then stops and shoots a 3?

good call on iverson. the only problem is that he's ultra streaky from the outside. but when he's on his game, you are right, he is impossible to defend.

    knifejc:

imo, if you back off of kobe, he'll keep shooting from the outside. t-mac, on the other hand, will mix it up. in other words, i think tracy's a smarter player.

In other words, Kobe takes what the defense gives him, and McGrady will force penetration when there might not be any penetration available?

Comparing T-Mac to Kobe, it seems like McGrady shoots way too much from the outside. He likes to come off screens, and he shoots a lot more 3's than Kobe.

Kobe goes to the basket strong. He's not near Jordan's ability to finish, but he keeps going in.

Iverson, yeah, maybe. But he stops himself by clanking more than half his shots.

Come on now, when it comes to most unstopable.. its Mcgrady!

We're talking about the modern Dr.J here. The guy 6-8 long arm frame gives him the ability to shoot over anybody. His quickness allows him to drive by any defender foolish enough to get up on him. And when you watch him play, you can see that confindence that oozes from his basketball playing soul. He has that look where you know he knows nobody can stop him. The dude is by far the most enjoyable player to watch. If thats not enough, then his stats will set the record straight, cause it all begins with his high field goal percentage. I mean anybody who shoots as much as he does and can still convert such a high a percentage of his shots.. well that tells you just how unstoppable the guy is.

The point is, one-on-one, with no help, Iverson doesn't need to take the outside shots. He's past you.
