Coen Bros are among my favorites. Hard to argue the body of work of some of those other listed though

I'll take Coen brothers over these other guys, who are (imo) overrated by a certain demographic (who happen to post here a lot). But, I'd say Coen brothers get a lot of their edge from consistently good screenwriting, while these other guys' material isn't consistently as solid.

Alexander Payne is a top tier director who's batting 1.00:

    Nebraska
    The Descendants
    Sideways

    Election

Coen's work has a lot of misses in the 00s and one big win with No Country.

For me it is definitely Nolan, I just wanted to throw Aronofsy out there.

    Requiem For a Dream
    The Fountain
    The Wrestler
    Black Swan
    Noah (Haven't seen it yet)

Yea he's been killing it too.

If I look at the list I posted and your list on Aronofsky and decided to spend a day watching ONLY one director's movie (and ONLY their good movies) then my list would be:

    1. Nolan
    2. Coen
    3. Tarantino
    4. Fincher
