Landon put the US into the round of 16 when they had to have it. Isner beat a qualifier to get to the 2nd round. The Isner match is the more historical event, but its a lesser accomplishment.
The 5th set alone lasted longer than the previous record for the longest match played, which was 6+ hours. Unbelievable.
Voted for Donovan. The difference is, Isner is the favorite to win that, while US was playing against the whole world and was supposed to fail.
First round match at Wimbeldon - historic no doubt- is not equal to a goal that puts the USA into the knockout round. Both amazing but the magnitude of Donovan's was greater. DD
20 years from now, people will remember Donovan's goal. By next year we'll have forgotten about that other guy.
In the context of the overall event, US moving on to the round of 16 vs advancing past the first round of Wimbledon, then Donovan wins. Isolating the accomplishments, the goal itself vs the longest tennis match ever played, Isner wins easily.
Donovan just got the USA to the next round of the World Cup. We've been there before. He's been there before. While exciting, it's nothing really that new. Isner (and Mahut) set the record books of an entire sport on fire. Edge: Isner.
in hindsight. the few people ive known in real life that constantly use that "thats what she said" reference are always REALLY cool...
