I've been hearing two, almost contradictory sentiments about the Rockets from the national media. (1) Adelman is doing a terrific coaching job, getting these players lacking in talent/skills to play together and win games. (2) Morey is doing a great job finding undervalued players that play hard and will fit together. Whatever success the Rockets may achieve this season in terms of wins, who do give more credit to? A related question I'd like to hear people's thoughts on -- which one would you say is more valuable to the organization (leaving aside age)?
Both. These are great role players that Morey has brought in, it's the coach that's making them great. Without Adleman we wouldn't be able to get as far as we have. The personnel fits the coach better than ever in his 3rd year. Basically, Morey is bringing in great role players that fit Rick's system. Now, if we could only have healthy superstars...
They may lack height, but they dont lack skill. In fact, take what skills they have and give them a few more inches of height and you are looking at potential stars in players such as Hayes, Lowry, Brooks, Landry.
Adelman deserves a bigger share of the credit than Morey does. I don't think any coach in this league could get the performance out of our players like Adelman does.
I think that Adelman is perennially underappreciated as a coach -- for example, to this day he does not get enough credit for what was a historic feat at the time: a 22 game winning streak by a team that lost its best player less than halfway through. But I think Morey deserves even more credit for finding real talent where others failed to see it. Again: other than Shane Battier, not a single player on the Rockets' active roster was drafted higher than 24th. And while it is true that they work hard and are scrappy and play like a team, these guys have very real talent and routinely create mismatches for other teams every day, from Brooks' otherworldly speed to Landry's incredible ability to score efficiently from the post to Chuck Hayes' unusual defensive abilities. These guys aren't scrubs -- not a single one of them, excepting Cook of course. They just don't have widespread acclaim like others do.
I give the credit to Morey. Every player on the roster was a known hard-worker before they were brought in. They are all self-motivated. I like Adelman and think he is doing a hell of a job but when he doesn't have to worry about getting these guys to focus or "get up" for games it takes away a lot of stress and makes his job much, much easier. To be honest, the offense isn't exactly genius either. It's effective but pretty basic. Morey brought all these guys in so I have to give him most of the credit.
They complement each other (cop out). *edited for CH* Remember Adelman had a good relationship with Geoff Petrie in Sacramento and in Portland, and it seems he's developing a good relationship with Morey here. I don't know who the GM of the Warriors was while Adelman was there, but it was a bad stint for Rick.
I give more credit to Morey. It's the NBA. Teams are good because they are talented, and yes, hustle is a talent. A good coach can't turn chicken **** into chicken salad, look at D'antoni in NYC. Of course Adelman is a great coach, but he's got talent to work with.
Put me down for the cop out. They are perfect for each other. Adelman: You... complete me. And I just had to... Morey: Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at hello. You had me at hello.
idk about that...chuck hayes and shane battier would play as as hard as they do here if they were on any other team. landry and kyle lowry too. we just have a group of guys who all play hard that happen to be on the same team. i give adelman credit for our highest offensive efficiency in 10 years though.
I voted Morey. I agree that Adelman is undervalued by most of the league, but this roster was constructed with guys that have always been underestimated or undervalued. Put it this way... since Morey took the job *even in part* this roster has been overhauled with quality people who work hard and do their job well. Chuck, Tmac and Yao. That's it. The rest of the roster has been replaced by parts better than those preceding them and/or parts that are ideal for the type of system that Adelman is known for. Morey tried to replace Chuck... but he couldn't do it with Landry or Dorsey (though I think Landry was closer to it than Dorsey ever was) but everyone else he's upgraded in only three years completely on the job without sacrificing the winning attitude brought to the team by JVG. Heck he even upgraded the coach - sorry JVG I still love you - by pulling in someone who is well known for helping each of his players succeed to their potential. That's pretty impressive by anyone's standards. Yes Adelman and the coaching staff deserve credit for utilizing what they were given, but Morey is the one who assembled the toys for coach to play with.
I'd go with Morey. Mainly because he's the guy who chose Adelman in the first place. Hence, Adelman's accomplishment are due to his genius.
This is a really tough question. It's like the chicken or the egg question. Does Morey make Adelman look good, or does Adelman make Morey look good? One thing for sure, we're incredibly lucky to have these two guys running the team. It seems there's a good chance they'll get their due recognition at the end of this season, if the Rockets keep performing the way they are. Is there any other GM-coach pairing you'd rather have running the Rockets? I can't think of one. I guess because Morey brought in Adelman, and not the other way around, I'll go with Morey deserving the most credit.
Both. In the long run,DM might become more important. Rick has come a long way with the Rockets, and is going to be hard to replace. However,it's harder to get a good GM instead of a good coach these days.
This question is hard. Morey makes the roster moves but only few coaches can cultivate talent and teamwork like Adelman can. I can't decide
