...I use to go in the woods a lot when I lived in Huntsville as a kid and never got bit by a Scorpion or anything else really. (even doing dumb stuff like snake hunting...) However, when I was around 12 or so...I had went with my parents to visit a neighbor's house across the dirt street (still in the country/woods) ...sitting in a chair I did not notice a Scorpion crawled up my pants legs over my knee and blasted me on my left leg near my private parts... ...Did it hurt? Hell yea...it felt like someone slowly pushing a nail through yur leg...(I do not want to go that again..) Fortunately, the people in the house knew about their scorpion problem and had medicine to help.(The creature was nearly 4 inches long to my horror...sorry to the animal lovers, but the thing got smashed.) I bring this up now because I was o.k. in an hour and now you always here about this insect being in or near the same category with black widows, and brown recluses in terms of dangerous stings. I wonder if anyone else has been stung and whether or not it was indeed a big deal?
Never been stung by one but that hurt just to read your account. Worst thing I ever got stung by was a red wasp when I was like 10. I think we put some baking soda on it or something.
I was stung by one of those dang scorpions when I was in Guatemala. It hurt like crap and, like you, I had heard they were up there with black widows, etc. I was a bit scared seeing as how I was nowhere near civilization or a hospital. The pain went away after about half an hour and nothing else ever happened. I thought for a while that it might be the end, but it seems there are many different species of scorpions and some can actually kill you. Others are just like getting stung by a yellow-jacket or wasp. I hear the ones in the deserts of Northern Mexico are really poisonous. We got lucky, I guess. Never been snake-bit though, don't want that at all.
I've never been stung by a scorpion but I have been bitten by a damn ant. Now I seriously doubt that an ant bite feels anywhere near as bad as a scorpion sting but for such a small creature that thing packs a mean bite.
I was in a 4 foot pit with a scorpion it it, I got the hell out of there while my friend just stayed in there and amazingly didn't get stung. My little brother once was playing in a fire ant nest and got bit several times, he was screaming like a mother for 2 hours straight . Since I have moved to California I have never been attacked by an animal, although when out of the state I have been attacked by a rottweiler, Bitten by many insects, and stung by a bee.
never been stung...but i found one in my house one day so i put it in an empty mcdonalds french fry box and nuked it....it was cool
Man, after that red wasp sting, this one ant bite had to be the most painful bug related thing I've ever had. I felt something really painful on my neck and tried to knock whatever it was off. I couldn't find it. About 5 seconds later, the second bite comes (in the same freaking spot) and I go to work now and finally knock it off. It was friggin huge, like a solid centimeter long and pretty wide. The bite was not only a huge bump but even had a little hole in it, like a volcano or something. Damn that hurt and man I'm a wuss if that's the second worst pain ever.
saw something on TV that said the small little scorpions are the deadly ones to humans and the bigger ones aren't.
I feel the same way Nomar but you would be surprised how much we actually need many of these insects.
My brother just got 150+ ant bites paint balling the other day. And I had a friend (who was about 3) who sat in a fire ant bed. His whole body was covered in bites. I can't imagine the pain. Those things really hurt!!! I've encountered scorpions at a friend's house in Austin when I was little. My mom almost got stung when she found one in her shoe. I think I cried because I was scared. I been stung by yellow jackets, bees and red wasps. I was playing one day in my backyard and I stopped to sit down with my friend. We were just talking and I looked over at my arm and the yellow jacket was just sitting there stinging me. It's like I didn't even feel it until I saw it. Totally freaked me out. We used meat tenderizer or deodorant or maybe both. The other ones I don't remember as well. But I know it sucked.
Let's just be thankful that we don't have bullet ants in the United States. These little bastards get their name because their sting has been said to feel like a gunshot wound. OUCH!!!
Dude, I am SO allegeric to scorpions! Was "stung" or "bit" or whatever by one back when I was a teen. Happened when running on the side of the house with my brothers and sister. One side of our house was quite narrow and I remember lots of wood back there that we stepped on and over when running through. Anyway, ran through there once playing chase and was stung above my ankle. It felt like someone took a metal rod and rammed it through. Because I was running, I collapsed on the ground. I tried to get up and walk on it, and I swear that the leg itself had shattered. By this time I was crawling on the ground towards the house. I was calling for help from my brothers and sisters, but of course they thought that I was playing! Made it in, was having hot-cold flashes. I laid on the floor in front of the fan for a while, but it wasn't helping any. Suddenly started itching like crazy. I'm taking a bath. Wrong-go-bongo! No sooner than I hit the water, I looked like the Thing of the Fantastic Four (sorry, I still love comics!). Ran next door butt naked (ewww) where they called my mom, who was at church recording a gospel album. She wasn't pleased. Anyway, she took me to the hospital (LSU, the only free hospital in Shreveport) where we waited overnight for me to be seen. This is one of the worst hospitals on earth. I've seen people die in the waiting room. Fell asleep in the waiting room during the night but awoke on a stretcher. Apparently I had a seizure. I've got to carry a epi-pen with me everywhere just in case. I still have them to this day.
I've been attacked numerous times by red ants. I've been stung by a bee I've had a close encounter with an alligator. I've been nipped by a dog I've been scratched countless times by cats A bird pooped on my friend On the bright side: Dragon flies have always been very respective of me.
I have never seen a Scorpion outside a cage. When I was little, I used to play in the woods all the time. Amazing, the only thing that happened to me was getting stung on the neck and finger from a yellow jacket. Everytime I saw a nest, I always tear them down or aggrivate them. If I saw a little next one, I would wait for a a couple weeks for it to grow larger, then I'd tear down all their hard work =) As for fireants, I always was bitten by them. Fireants hate water ... i'd have one or two crawling on me and start sweating, then they would bite the **** out of me!
Bullet ants live in Central and South America (most live in the Amazon regions of S.A.). Like I said their sting feels like a bullet wound or at least that's what people lucky enough to get stung by one say. I'll take their word for it. Someone also said about a bullet ant sting: if you have ever been stung by a wasp and multiply that pain by 30, then you would know what a bullet ant sting feels like. These ants also pack a mean bite as well. Here is a website with a little info on bullet ants Bullet Ants
i have the ultimate scorpion horror story!! my parents live in west houston near a field that was originally supposed to be the site of tully stadium. they have had snakes, rats, possums, rabbits and, YES, scorpions! I was home from college one summer...my parents were away on vacation. I awoke with a burning sensation on my arm. I thought, in the first moments of waking up, that someone had come in and given me a shot or something. I jumped up out of bed and looked at my arm...my attention was then drawn to the scorpion CRAWLING ACROSS MY PILLOW!!!! I killed it with my shoe...and called poison control. They told me to put bleach on it...it stung like fire!! Then...I was home for spring break the next year...the exact same thing happened, except this time it happened in the middle of the night. Again, I was stung on the arm (the same arm!) in the same bed!!! Again, I jumped up and killed the thing. That day I went to a place in south houston that carries the definitive scorpion killing chemical (can't remember what it's called)! I swear, I was cursed or something!!
I have been bitten, stung, scratched, clawed, and otherwise torn up by all kinds of wildlife. I do a lot of mountain biking, and love the outdoors. Below are some of the encounters: Bitten probably a thousand times by fire ants. I was allergic when I was a kid, and being bitten so much, I guess my body developed an immunity to it. Been bitten by army ants, red ants, and any other ant you can think of that bites. You know those really big red ants that are in fields and make nests in the ground? Yeah, those hurt worse than a bee sting. Bee stings, hornets, red wasps, GIANT wasps......you name it. I do not recommned a sting from a GIANT wasp. I have even had a praying mantis (no, not Sean Bradley) clamp those front claws down on my finger before. Cats have clawed me (to the point of drawing blood), birds ahve attacked me, dogs have chased and bitten me. Snakes of all sorts have struck at me, but never hit. Spider of all sorts have bitten me (luckily no recluses or Widows). Have you ever seen a tarantula in North Texas run and jump at you? But never a scorpion sting.
