While discussing the passing of Michael Jackson, my wife, my brother in law, and I were talking about who are real global entertainment icons. The criteria was that you have to be known everywhere, which includes Europe, Asia and Africa. Not just Hong Kong, Tokyo, South Africa and Egypt, we meant everywhere Moldova, Congo, Nepal, etc. Here is who we came up with. Michael Jackson Madonna Mother Teresa Pricness Diana Muhammad Ali Michael Jordan After that we could not think of anyone that fit our criteria. Can you think of any others?
David Beckham. Actually, there would probably be a lot more soccer players (not that I would really know), but the lack of knowledge about them in the States disqualifies them as "global" icons. Also, Batman. I'm almost serious...
The biggest global entertainment icon prior to the advent of modern media was, by far, Charlie Chaplin.
Good grief, I thought the same thing. I heard she played a mean trombone. BTW, I think it was tragic she didn't get as much notoriety in her death as some of these entertainers. The work she did was incredible and she was humble to boot. She was one of the more recognizable figures in the world, as well. Sadly, she died around the same time as Princess Di, so her death was shuffled off to the bottom of the front page for the most part.
Wow y'all are ridiculous. Can't believe no one has mentioned Pele. When you're a soccer player and people in the USA know who you are, that's pretty impressive. I wouldn't put Lebron James on the list yet.
