I'm curious as to who used to do this. When I was 18 and so on, we were notorious for hanging out at an apartment, and then cruising Westheimer after 2:00 a.m. Oddly enough, this strategy worked quite well at the time. So much so that it became enough of a strategy to make it illegal to do so now. Any others? An old friend of ours just got divorced, and we were talking about the girls we would get back then. There were a lot of good, odd stories.
Hell yea, my buds and I used to cruise Westheimer when I was about 16. But we didn't pick up any chicks though. I think the police started to take notice when the street racers decided to use Westheimer as a race track. I used to see all these street race cars and people hanging out on the sidewalks watching the cars go by. I haven't seen that in a while. I don't know where the racers went though. Then there were meet-ups where the racers would all gather in a huge parking lot..like a Randalls or Target. Always along Westheimer.
i'm confused about how it is illegal now. it's the same thing on Sunset, but how do you actually define "cruising" by law? when does 4 or five dudes or chicks in a convertible turn into illegal?
We used to do that all the time. Not after 2am though, that's when all the drunks were usually out driving home. We tried to find some place to hangout by 2am. What is illegal exactly? I don't get it.
lol i use to do it when i was 8 (1998) my sister had just got her new civic, and she use to always go cruisin wit her friends and i begged to go bc i knew thats where all the nice sooped up cars would be good times..that caused 1 accident and 1 ticket however lol accident-illegal dude from mexico soo the ppl were beggin us not to call the police, and paid for it even tho we hit them (the only damage basically was our front license plate got bent and a little chipped paint) ticket-she was speedin, not racing a friend from like beltway 8 & westheimer to hwy6 & westheimer..we got pulled over at the very end where there was a police car just sittin in front of our family friends neighborhood, next to laser quest, who was with us..buttt there was another exact white honda civic, same model and yr and everythin that was with us also that was pushin it more than us..but i noticed a couple yrs ago the actual speed limit on westheimer is 35..idk if its always been like that and i just never paid attention or did they change it?
Westheimer used to be a parking lot back in the 80s. Cars were jam-packed from the Elgin intersection all the way out to Lamar H.S. Those were some crazy times. The beginning of the end was when the "gay bashing" started, if I remember correctly. Totally lame...
I got my first ticket at Westheimer @ Gessner. I read once Westheimer is the longest continuous street in the world...I don't know if that's true or not.
That area sucks now I cant imagine it ever being a good "party" area... It's all about midtown these days
The place to cruise in my town was Nettleton Avenue and the local lawmakers and police got together to make it illegal to cruise that strip about 5 years ago. What I was told was an ordinance was put in place so that cruisers could not go up the strip turn around and then go back down it and keep doing it. Stricter loitering laws were made so that kids couldn't just stop and hang out in parking lots too.
Ummm Westheimer still has tons of great bars and lounges to hang out at that play good music. To say that the area sucks just shows that you aren't familiar with anything over in the Westheimer/Montrose area. Midtown for the most part is douchebag central these days.
I was there way back in highschool (the '80s). If I remember correctly there were two areas of Westheimer to cruise. One was upper Westhhiemer (Galleria area and to the west) where you would show off fancy cars. There used to even be people that would hang out in parking lots in the upper Westheimer area that would raise "rating signs" (i.e. numbers 1 - 10) when you car went by to judge your car. The other was lower Westheimer (Montrose area) where you would be in stop and go traffic with other cruisers. Lower Westhiemer was pretty crazy... The area between 610 and, say, Shephard was "no-man's land" as it was just used to get from one area to the other. I believe the residents of Montrose put a stop to the cruising as it really gummed up their neighborhood. Plus you had random people driving all throughout the backstreets to avoid the traffic on Westheimer itself. The residents got sick of it and asked the police to put an end to it.
Hahah. That's exactly what came to my mind. My brother took me cruising a few times in the late 80s on Westheimer. I remember one time near Montrose we saw this hot chick in fishnet stockings, great legs, and a nice ass. You guessed it... tranny. But yeah, Westheimer was a parking lot back then. Moved slow as molasses but was great to just kinda hang.
We cruised lower westhimer in the 80s but it was a long drive from katy but we usually mixed it with a trip to numbers so that always improved our mood.
What about Miami Subs? Anyone remember that place. People used to hang out in the parking lot there on the weekend.
19 miles doesn't seem that long. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=westheimer%2Fbagby&daddr=Westheimer+Rd+to:Farm-To-Market+Rd+1093%2FWestheimer+Rd+to:Farm-To-Market+Rd+1093%2FWestheimer+Rd+to:Farm-To-Market+Rd+1093%2FWestheimer+Rd+to:29.704157,-95.687828&hl=en&geocode=FYfdxQEdr5ZQ-iHVunk_phv-Yw%3BFezTxQEdMNtP-g%3BFXvDxQEd6_VO-g%3BFdbBxQEd0mdO-g%3BFYi_xQEdFrFN-g%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=5&sz=12&via=1,2,3,4&sll=29.722943,-95.60955&sspn=0.147585,0.219727&ie=UTF8&ll=29.735762,-95.388107&spn=0.036892,0.054932&z=14 Wiki's page on Westheimer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westheimer_Road
