only man, monkeys and a few squirrels are credited with seeing colors.. Interesting, is'nt it? ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
That is interesting, but you know what, I wonder what they can see that we can't....Nature has a way of surprising us. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I'm pretty stupid when it comes to biology, but how in the hell do we know what other animals can see? ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin
Did you know that dogs and bees can smell fear? ------------------ Bingbong was set up, led to an untimely death in the prime of his life for no other reason than pure malice. Things like that do not go unavenged. Sometimes it spills out onto the field of play.
I bet those red ant's can smell it too. Strange how they all bite at once. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I think some scientist got too much time and money ;-) I think that other animals have other senses or sharper one. If this is in relation to discrimination etc. . .. if we were all blind it would be based on something else The deep voices verses the High voices The faint smelling vs the Strong smelling The smooth skinned vs the rough skinned it is in our nature . .. . but we civilized we 'pose to be able to rise above our nature Rocket River Difference is the spice of life ------------------
I'm sure a huge number of animals can see color... otherwise what is the purpose of bright plumage, skin color on animals being different to attract the opposite sex, camouflage, etc, etc. ------------------ "Now it is more clear that it doesn't make sense." -- HeyPeeism at its convoluted best.
drofdunk -- great point...I've always heard the males of most species have these bright colors to attract mates (the cardinal comes to mind). Did you know my neighbor has three rabbits? - i had to finish up the jerry mcguire reference from above..sorry! ------------------
Dr dunk has some interesting points. It also makes you wonder that maybe, somewhere, if you believe in evolution and all sorts of stuff, that a world or species exists in a black and white environment because color isn't useful to them. Or maybe Transparent. Or maybe a world made of something that is much more evolved than just color. Would be strange to discover something like that. And what if we aren't seeing the world for what it really is. Maybe our eyes are limited. Maybe they are giving us a skewed version of the world. ------------------ humble, but hungry. Too bad they can't smell their own fear, because I purchased some of that white powder Fire Ant killer at Home Depot the other day and it worked like a gem! I was really impressed! Instead of a Fire Ant Mound, I now have a mound of Fire Ants! ------------------ "Beware the lollipop of mediocrity. Lick once and you suck forever."
Bats emit sonic waves which tell them where they are going. Not really hearing. I read somewhere that cats see everything in bright, flourescent colors like pink and orange. Also, deer have trouble distinguishing color or shape. If you sneak up on a deer and it notices you, you can just freeze and even though it might look right at you, it'll eventually go back to whatever it was doing. If it doesn't sense motion or hear/smell you, it won't know you're there. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
Another thing, what makes people so sure that all humans see colors the same way? For all we know, Bob's idea of blue might actually be Nancy's idea of red. There's really no way of knowing unless we do eye transplants or something. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
Oh god, don't get into that! Bees can see color, many birds (eagles can see 2 miles away!!), I thought dolphins could... Others I cannot remember. ------------------ I have just realized that the stakes are myself I have no other ransom money, nothing to break or barter but my life my spirit measured out, in bits, spread over the roulette table, I recoup what I can nothing else to shove under the nose of the maître de jeu nothing to thrust out the window, no white flag this flesh all I have to offer, to make the play with this immediate head, what it comes up with, my move as we slither over this go board, stepping always (we hope) between the lines
I saw this program the other night where this dog can tell the difference between TOOLS! Yep, hammer, screwdriver, vice-grips, he knew 'em all. He helped his owner build an outside deck! Who needs color, thats AMAZING! ------------------ "Beware the lollipop of mediocrity. Lick once and you suck forever."
My dog knows the difference between his toys. Tell him "ball" and he gets a ball. Tell him "fluffy" and he gets one of his lambs wool toys. Tell him "toy" and he gets one of his rubber squeak toys. He has a toybox and will stick his nose in to sort to find the specific toy he wants (this is both when we ask for one and on his own, just because he is in the mood).
I seriously was worried when I saw the title of this thread... I thought this was going to be about seeing auras around people or something... *phew!* ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
that is a good question and the doc makes a good point... what about those nocturnal animals, do they see like, in night vision? rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! visit: groovehouse.org
Nocturnal animals, like bats and owls, use their hearing, not their sight, to hunt. ------------------ "Modern bourgeois society with its relations of production, of exchange and property, a society that has conjured up such gigantic means of production and of exchange, is like the sorceror, who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world whom he has called up by his spells."
