we're not just talking one-liners here but in many cases angry multiple paragraph diatribes. i have never quite been able to grasp the thinking behind this.

and yes, naturally someone will mention the apparent irony in posting this on an online message board but the relevant distinction is that a message board, for all practical purposes, is a community. there's prolonged interaction and established identity sufficing the opportunity for fruitful, edifying discussion.

    but these comment pages...

is it just some cathartic need to vent irregardless of oblivion?

A similar example are the same people who post lengthy comments on Youtube.

The most heated arguments I have seen on the internet usually take place on the comments under youtube videos.

    Go figure.

I do think that in some cases a sort of community (of angry ranters/conspiracy theorists, as they seem to show up a lot there too) kind of develops as some people do rant there more than others. But yeah, it's a weak answer, and I'm not too sure myself.

Yea, that too. I would really like to just sit down with one of these people one time and understand how their minds work.

Did Youtube change their comment system? It seems to me they are automatically hidden, even though I didn't change any of the settings. Even when I change them back to show the comments, it always reverts back to hidden comments. I like to read Youtube comments to understand the sentiment of 14 year olds world wide.

My cousin who is a missionary of sorts and who isn't very internet savvy tries to argue with Muslims on youtube.

    Weird rationale there.

I was wondering this too. Like is there a chance that there is actually a "community" on say NYtimes.com, similar to the D&D, with known camps and alliances? It just seemed way too far-fetched to deem plausible.

What about the people who comment randomly on sports sites?

Like after Kelly Dwyer posts on article you see somebody with a gay avatar telling everyone about how much USC rules when the article posted was about the Top 10 NBA Defenders of the last decade. Then 5 comments later 2 people start arguing about Probihibition.

I really do just think they are like parasites looking to latch onto anything that will sustain their ever-growing need for some sort of attention.

i actually think those are the people that don't know message boards exist but feel that need for some sort of outlet.

Similar things happen on Yahoo Answers...

Actually, Yahoo Answers itself is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen.

The people who post on the Chronicle are really scary. Fringe people from both sides.

It's just an unfiltered an accelerated version of letters to the editor. On financial sites like WSJ's Deal Journal Blog or more "cerebral" mag sites like Economist.com, the comments and discussions can be somewhat interesting. It's probably a pretty good strategy from the publishers' standpoint, because it allows for a more interactive online news experience and ensures repeat I(online) business.

Just more material supporting my belief of the internet being the sewer system of the human condition.

Its a bunch of lonely, obsessive, paranoid people (like myself!) who don't have a voice in regular life, but still thinks their opinions and beliefs matter so greatly that their vision will unearth the truth that we've neglected to see for so long. And they must express their views before its indeed too late for the world.

Or they're just young and dumb.

the chron.com comment people are the sorriest.

I realized that it wasn't a chron.com thing, it was just an internet thing. During the whole Steve McNair thing, I would read the Tennessean and those comments were just as stupid as what I see in the chron.

People who post on newspaper sites are the stupidest people on the internet.

If you post on the chron, identify yourself.

I think I found Mr. Meowgi before.

I'm thinking you would probably get bored. I doubt there is a lot of thought behind it.
