Growing up in the 70s, I was weaned on groups like The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, and numerous other bands who have since earned acclaim as all-time greats. For every other decade, I have tried to give newer, unknown bands a chance. In the 80s, it was groups like The Alarm, U2 (in 1982), The Call, Midnight Oil, Echo and the Bunnymen, and others. In the 90s, it was Soundgarden, Pearl Jam (hooked after seeing them on SNL), Weezer, Green Day, Blink 182, Live (I thought they were going to be the next great thing after Throwing Copper), Radiohead, etc. I even went back to the 50s and 60s because I didn't really grow up listening to those artists, so I had to "discover" Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Animals, The Yardbirds, etc. I've been so busy for the last decade with starting a business that I've relied on the old tried-and-true music to get me through. So, who are the great bands that have emerged from 2000 on?? Wilco? Coldplay? Arcade Fire? Kings of Leon? Foo Fighters? You rarely if ever hear any of these groups played on the radio (a depressing topic in itself), so I'm lost in a sea of unfamiliarity. I realize that a group doesn't have to be well-known to be great, but I just don't have the time to listen to everybody. My favorite groups from the 80s, for example are REM, US, The Call, and The Smithereens, so the "great" newer bands can be famous or not-so-famous. I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do promise to download at least 1 song from each suggestion (well, within reason). Thanks!!!
That's cool. I have really grown to love them by listening to their albums in their entirety. Shoot me a message through the board if you would like me to send them to you via dropbox links.
hmm... coldplay/arcade fire/kings of leon/the shins/modest mouse/the strokes/snow patrol/keane Those are some of the "big" bands of the last decade. I'm probably forgetting some, but oh well.
For sure but the OP had already mentioned Radiohead.. They really became legendary in 98 with OK Computer
Radiohead was technically putting out music in the 80s. Grizzly Bear, The National, Animal Collective, Sufjan, The Shins, Beach House, LCD Soundsystem, Deerhunter, M83, etc for 2000s.
A couple of favorite bands from this era: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Spoiler <object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mL2Yohft-7E?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mL2Yohft-7E?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object> The Strokes Spoiler <object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TOypSnKFHrE?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TOypSnKFHrE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object> Interpol Spoiler <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vaDw4CAcXVE?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vaDw4CAcXVE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="390"></embed></object> Muse http://youtu.be/KwhjlNvF-4Q The Hives Spoiler <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1M02bAWDFkI?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1M02bAWDFkI?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="390"></embed></object> The Fratellis Spoiler <object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XlMfV7A3V00?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XlMfV7A3V00?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object>
oh wow i completely missed that. yeah definitely the national gets my vote along with high violet and boxer I also enjoy Alligator. Spoon started in the 90's but they gained popularity in the 2000's so I'll recommend that.
OK, I'll download at least one song from most of these groups tomorrow- thank you very much for the suggestions.
Downloaded the #1 downloads from each of these groups: Arcade Fire- Ready to Start Kings of Leon- Use Somebody The National- Bloodbuzz Ohio Animal Collective- My Girls White Stripes- Seven Nation Army The National song is pretty cool, as is the White Stripes one. The others are pretty good. I guess that I have to give them more time. I looked up the #1 downloads for my 5 faves from the 80s, and I'm sorry, but the 2000s pale in comparison (but maybe I'll change my mind later): The Replacements- Alex Chilton The Call-I Still Believe REM- It's the End of the World The Smithereens- A Girl Like You U2- Beautiful Day I know it's going to sound like I'm biased, but I can remember the first song that I heard from each of these 80s groups: Gloria from U2, The Walls Came Down from The Call, South Central Rain from REM, Blood and Roses from The Smithereens, and Little Mascara from the Replacements, and I can honestly tell you that I immediately liked each one of those songs A LOT. I may need to download more from White Stripes and The National. Definitely willing to give the 2000s groups more than a precursory listen.
White Stripes are elite, geez. Although if you're including Radiohead in that statement I'll have to give you respect.
