It makes some sense to allow some of the new media outlets into the rotation. They might be propaganda outfits, but it shouldn't be the Correspondent Assn's monopoly who gets in any more than it is the White House's. But of course, White House had to come at it like fascists, blocking enemy papers instead of just expanding the pool.

Hey brother - why try to influence the message to the media when you can just write the message for the media and give it to those that will trade their integrity for part of the grift.

Got to get that money for nothing and the chicks for free after all.

an administration that lies through its teeth gets to determine what is “truth”

When they do something that is fascist, unconstitutional, and authoritarian, Brietbart/Newsmax/OAN/Fox News/Alex Jones will be the only ones allowed at the press conference that day so they can report the “truth” to the American people.

I am guessing accessibility and transparency is pretty far down on the list of things to cry about. They have been much more transparent than the prior click even negotiating some deals in public.

No, they have been far better at propaganda than prior administrations.

It is all window dressing, just like the "letters" that have been "leaked" to the media between different Trump officials spelling out their "transparency".

When you control the message, who reports and gets to ask questions about the message - it isn't transparency and it isn't accessibility. It is a heavily controlled and dictated series of events.

However - people believe what they want to believe often.

You discount the prior administration's propaganda. Jean Pierre and Psaki had their script and stuck to it. They lied a lot. But we have different perspectives and it's all good.

Everyone can complain about prior actions and how useless the questioning (and the answers) at the White House is (they are mostly useless to me, but in other departments within the executive branch, they were still very useful).

But, of course, this is going the wrong way and setting the wrong precedent. (It was wrong, so let’s double down on it?) We still have the First Amendment, but restricting access to the White House means the press has less freedom to ask questions, thus enabling state propaganda to stand more easily.

Trump got that taste of the Modi stranglehold on journalism in India when they had the joint press conference. It got to a level where they don't ask questions. Well they do, but they frame a question like this :

"Mr. PRESIDENT I heard rumors about your hog having massive girth. Is this true Mr. President? Mr. President! Why is your hog so girthy?!?!"

That's what Trump wants in his press conference. Listen to any recent press conference with Trump. You will literally hear "journalists" not even ask a question. They would just express how awesome he is and the question would be "why are you so amazing?".

Don't do this. You are smarter than this. You know this isn't a "both sides" situation.

A pool rotation is maybe antiquated. He could do a cast on Zoom where everyone is invited. Could have an online function to submit questions and upvote questions from others. Press Sec goes down the list by question popularity. After time runs out, Staff writes responses to whatever couldn't be handled live. Corporate speaker conferences already do this.
