As I was looking at my stack of games that I have purchased the past few monthes (COD4, BioShock, Nba 2k8, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Rock Band (just the game)) I was wondering what the best year for gaming was?

For instance, what year was the best year, in cluchfans opinion, for game releases?

My vote really has to be this year so far, its been a long time since I have bought this many games in a little span of time and all the game mentioned above were quality, highly reviewed games.

    What do you guys think?

    2001 was pretty big.

You had Halo, GTA III, Final Fantasy X, Gran Turismo 3, Super Smash Bros Melee, Devil May Cry, MGS 2, Jak & Daxter, Ico, Max Payne, Paper Mario, Twisted Metal Black, and Silent Hill 2 just to name a few (I'm serious  ).

I didn't really think about other years since I remembered 2001 being pretty big (FFX, Halo, GTA III, etc.). BTW, I used Gamerankings to sort release dates, so hopefully these are all correct.

If some games didn't get delayed (MGS4, SSBB, GTAIV, etc.), 2007 might be close, but since those games didn't make it, I don't think it really compares to 2001, or even a few other years probably (although the handheld games are probably much better at this point).

edit: I'll note that I've yet to play 4-5 major games that I am hoping to play relatively soon, so my opinion might change...although I doubt that will be the case.

1998. The year Dance Dance Revolution came out. It united nerds world wide who aspired to learn how to dance and attract hot chicks at the clubs.

    I was thinking the same.

For "Best year for gaming" award, the game has to last me a little bit longer than a few weeks of entertainment.

1985 - First Year of 8 bit Nintendo and video gaming industry is never the same again.

1993 (part of late 92) - Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis are both becoming juggernauts, while Nintendo's long run is very slowly ending.....

Games released in 1993 (and late 92, since it's a few months before 93)

Mortal Kombat (SN, SG, Arcade), John Madden Football 93: Championship Edition (SG) , Robocop vs. Terminator (SN, it came almost year later on SG in more graphic version), Street Fighter II: Turbo Hyper Fighting(SN), Super Bomberman (SN), Super Mario All-Stars (SN), Tecmo Super Bowl (SN, SG), Tecmo Super NBA Basketball (SN, SB), Madden 94' (SN, SB), Top Gear 2 (SN), WWF Royal Rumble (SN,SG), Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SN, SG), Battle Toads and Double Dragon (SG), Blaster Master 2 (SG) Fatal Fury (SN, SG), Gunstar Heroes (SG), NBA Jam (SG, it came out on SN in 94), NHL Hockey 94 (SG), the last Shinobi game on Sega .... Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, Splatter House 3, Street Fighter II: Championship Edition (first SF game on Sega), Greatest Heavyweights, and X-Men

1991 - the first year for Super Nintendo and alot of classic Sega genesis games appeared on the scene.

Spiderman vs. the Kingpin, Battle Toads, Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, El Viento, Fastest 1, f-22 interceptor, Hardball, John Madden 92, Lakers vs. Celtics, Marble Madness, Master of Monsters, Mercs, Road Rash,

2001 - Playstation 2 arrives, along with Gamecube and X-Box and Playstation still putting out some pretty damn good games.

1988 - Turbo Graphix, Sega Genesis arrive, with Nintendo reigning supreme.

1996 - Sony Playstation banner year, and the first for whole Marvel vs. Capcom theme games (with Street Fighter vs. X-Men).....I love those games.

For me it was 1981 when Asteroids came out for Atari 2600. I was 11. It was the coolest thing ever.

I think the best years for gaming (at least for pc) was in the late 90's when online gaming's popularity started to sky rocket.
