I have used Norton Antivirus for years until they started charging an annual fee for the liveupdate. So now I am using a free scanner called AVG. Is it reliable? I know many people use a popular online scanner called TrendMicro. I also hear there are a few other free scanners available. So which one is the best? Any advice?
AVG is not bad i have used it before. You could always just use the older version of Norton like 2002 becuase there was no charge for the live update. Actually if you just uninstall the Norton Antivirus and then reinstall it, the subscription time starts over just like the initial year that it gave you. I have done that before many of times.
The problem is that my version of Norton Antivirus doesn't support XP. I don't mind to pay them a small fee to upgrade to a XP version but then I will have to pay an annual fee to use their liveupdate.
You always get a year free in the subscription. When that runs out uninstall and reinstall. You just have to pay for the newer version one time.
i've been using NAV2002 and when my subscription expired i uninstalled and reinstalled it. but i still got the message that it has expired. are you guys going into the registry and deleting other files?
FYI : Older versions of AV software often aren't as good at finding newer viruses. If there's anything on your computer that you should pay for, it's an updated version of AV software. I use : Eset NOD32 (the best!) Norton Antivirus 2004 (the other best!) AVG (only because it's free) SystemSuite 5's AV software (whatever)
Computer Associates has a product named EZ Trust. It contains anti-virus and a firewall. You can get it for free if you go to: http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/
We use NAV at work, and we tend to cuss it a bit 'cause it's a PITA. Still, they are generally the quickest to get new virus definitions out. At home I'm using Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security. Despite the stupid name, I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It works....WELL.....and it doesn't cost much at all. It's easy for the less technically inclied as well.
Yeah me too. I finally got around to getting virus protection after upgrading to XP 2 years ago... My old version of Norton wasn't compatible.
It's not bad, but it has done average in tests like the Virus Bulletin tests for virus detection. Eset and NAV have consistently been the best throughout their testing. The downside to NAV is that it's somewhat bloated, but very few AV software does as good a job or updates its defs as quickly or frequently.
