Certainly, most on this board think the Rockets are closer to winning big with T-Mac and Yao, but look at the future Portland has.

So which do you prefer: The Rockets chances now or Portland's chances in 2 years or so?

I'm a Rockets fan for life, but I would trade their situation for ours in a heart beat.

Ours, unless you can promise me that Oden will be the best center in the NBA in five years and Aldridge will live up to his potential I'll take us.

I think Roy is great, I also think Oden will dominate (I would take Durant) but I'm not sold on Aldridge. Either way you slice it Portland looks to be a force for years to come. The Rockets have a good shot right now IMO.

    I take Houston

oden and durant are excellent players. but i don't think they will be dominating right away in the nba, especially oden. and even if they do dominate, that won't win games with a great team overall.

I like theirs... were stuck in a position with 2 stars and 1 defensive stand out...and below average scrubs

after that we have no cap space....
draft prospects, our young players are not developed,

after another first round exit... id be suprised if anyone above average in skills even mentions us as a team he would like to play for

Its tempting to say Portland - but I'd say Houston. Don't get me wrong, I think Portland will make the playoffs next year and may not be far from being a contender if they bring in Oden (I don't think they'll pick Durant)...but there are a lot of "ifs" in that situation. There have been a lot of hyped up players who haven't panned out. I'd rather take a sure thing than a possibility

houston...simple....Yao and Tracy have proven themselves ALREADY...we know they are superstars!!!
Oden and Durant haven't done anything...remember when people thought Michael Olowakandi was going to be the next Olajuwon...yeah that turned out great....I'll go for h ouston since we KNOW what he we have..

    Portland or Houston?

If you look at Portland's situation they are incontrol of their salaries, with so many team options on their guys in 2008-09, and next year's team salary @ $58 mill, not including their picks, they are in a decent situation with a lot of young tallent.

The Rockets are strapped with no end until atleast 08-09. I don't know if Les will shell out extra cash for the tax, we'll have the roster we have today until 08 unless he does, or Morey pulls one over on some Cd'ish type GM.

I really like Portland's situation, more freedom, more tallent.

BUT, I am a homer so I'll take the Rockets.

    Portland.

We don't have a sure thing.

We have a quickly aging star in McGrady who is nowhere near as explosive as he used to be and seems to be accepting his decline in skills with defeat. After that, we have a great center, a defensive stopper and a bunch of scrubs. We are capped out and little talent to use in trades. We are also trying to turn ourselves into a contender when there are already teams like Dallas, SA, Phoenix, and Detroit at their peaks.

So really we have talent, but not much room to improve the team and are inferior to the teams above us by a great deal.

Portland has young talent to develop and cap space to improve themselves. If their GM works smart, that team should win a title down the line.

I wasn't just thinking of Oden and Durant. They have a lot of parts. The #1 pick, Aldridge, Roy, Jack, Webster, Randolph, Przbilla, Outlaw and 4-#2's.

I guess I'm just jealous. Can you imagine the excitement and possibilities we would be talking about on this board as opposed to the constant trade Juwan and Rafer for KG rants?

I do agree we have a better shot now than Portland, but I'm not sure a long shot with no future hope, is better than no shot and lots of future hope.

I think that Portland has ,with the draft, the pieces in place to be contending in three seasons.
Rockets do not have the pieces in place to be a contender. Yet it is possible that in two offseasons and about four additional players they could be a serious contender. We will know this season if Morey is able to get us any of the needed pieces.

yeah can you imagine what francis, mobley, griffin, and yao are gonna do in their prime? i mean who has the most potential. i think eddie griffin does he can go outside or inside and he's an amazing shotblocker. then again steve francis is like magic johnson but a better scorer. hmm tough call.

sorry. been there, done that. i think portland fans should be very excited and they probably do have a great future ahead of them, but it's not gonna be for a few years. the rockets still have a team that can compete for a championship. i may be a homer but i still believe that.

Portland. They aren't one of the teams I've ever followed closely but I will try next season. They will take Oden but Durant will be the more dominant NBA player.

They have no stars. I don't count Zach Randolph as a star despite that max contract and the often gaudy stats because he plays no defense, has no heart and is a problem off the court. You couldn't pay me to add that ball-hogging knucklehead to our roster. He reminds me of Maurice Taylor albeit more talented but with a worse attitude. Oden is probably going to be a superstar but he isn't one yet. Aldridge will probably never be a star and I won't be surprised if he's never even a starting quality player. I think Roy will be a borderline all-star but I'd be surprised if he's ever anywhere near as good as either Yao or T-Mac. I don't think Martell Webster is going to be a player in this league either. Oh - and guess what? They have a higher pay roll than us despite the fact we have two mega-stars and they have none. Their future could be promising, but Oden and Roy will have to be pretty damned good to be better than Yao + T-Mac. I wouldn't trade situations with them.

P.S. to trade situations with them you have to be willing to take on Darius Miles contract. No thanks.

How good do people think Oden is going to be? He is a terrific defender, but his offensive game isn't very good.

Is Oden going to be better than Dwight Howard?

They think so. Yes. But who knows? He'd have to be MUCH better than Dwight Howard before I'd prefer their situation to ours.

Good argument. I might could change my mind, although they do have more flexibility. I think they will be able to trade Randolph and believe you are underestimating Roy, Aldrich, and Oden.

    Portland.

Our team is built around two flawed superstars and we are stuck with them. No coaching change is going to fix them either.

    They have flexibility.

Wouldn't trading one of our superstars give you flexibility?
