*Yao Ming - MVP - There's a few different formulas for league MVP. One thing that Kobe Bryant has proven however is that no matter how gaudy your stats are, you have to finish a top seed to win it. You can win it with mediocre statistics (relatively speaking) as Dirk proved last year if your team is far and away the best in the league. Dirk averaged 24-25ppg, same as Duncan and Garnett the years they won it, but Yao won't score that much in this offense. He'll be used as more of a passer and get around 20ppg. He won't win this award.

*Tracy McGrady - MVP - The theory that two MVP candidates on the same team hurts each's chances was debunked by Nash winning it the year Amare averaged 26ppg. If we win 60+, I honestly think T-Mac has a chance at taking this award, especially as a lifetime acheivement award similar to Karl Malone and Charles Barkley when they won it in their 30's. He's sort of the forgotten man among superstars in the league and thus a big year will help with the voters, and unlike Yao, he's old enough (in basketball years) for the sympathy comeback year vote. He can average 25 a game in this offense if it allows him to focus on scoring rather than initiating.

*Rick Adelman - Head Coach of the Year - Another decent possibility, but not likely. We were a 52 win team last year. Even if we win 60 this year, it's kind of expected that we would improve and contend. The Coach of the Year generally goes to the team that overachieves, something we would have to win 65+ games to do. Not likely.

*Daryl Morey - Executive of the Year - Odds are at near 50/50 on this one, with Ainge probably the front runner right now. If they can trade Rafer for a solid contributor, and have a better regular season than the Celtics, this award is Morey's to lose.

*Shane Battier - Defensive Player of the Year - Close to zero chance. He might get a few votes for All-Defense though.

*Steve Francis - NBA All-Star - The award for Steve should have been Comeback Player of the Year, but they don't have that anymore. So, can China vote him into the All-Star game again? Unlikely. If we take Bryant and McGrady as starters, you are left with Nash, Ginobili and Parker, Deron Williams, and Baron Davis, among others. I don't think this is completely out of the realm of possibility, especially if we get off to a huge start and the sympathy/comeback vote comes into effect with the coach's. However, splitting time with Mike James will hurt him alot.

*Steve Francis/Mike James - 6th Man of the Year - Depends on who starts. Francis would have the better chance, especially given the sympathy vote I discussed earlier.

*Bonzi Wells - 6th Man of the Year - Francis/Mike James will hurt him alot with this.

*Luis Scola - Rookie of the Year - I personally don't see Oden having much impact this first year, but who knows with Durant. Scola's only chance would be if he averages 17ppg with Durant at 20, but the Rockets winning 60+. It won't happen. There's no way he averages over 10ppg on this roster. And team record is weighed the least in this award out of all of them.

*Rafer Alston - Most Improved Player - If Rafer can improve his field goal percentage to bring it near the league average, he can run away with this one.

    In order of likelihood, personally:
    -Morey Executive of the Year
    -Francis 6th Man
    -Adelman COY
    -McGrady MVP
    -Scola ROY
    -Francis All-Star
    -Yao MVP
    -Shane Battier DPOY
    -Bonzi Wells 6th Man

LOL I like how Rafer is in your post but not in the poll or your list of most likely. That is because there is exactly 0% chance of Rafer winning most improved player. If there were a preseason award for most likely to be traded he would win it.

Most improved is for guys who had done little previously but broke out, like say Kevin Martin. I don't think Francis can really improve on what he did before, he was a multiple-time All Star.

I disagree that Yao's scoring will be held down. I think that when Adelman gets to camp, he'll realize that Yao belongs in the low post as a scorer, not in the high post, and he'll keep up his act of efficient scoring to the tune of 25 ppg. Adelman is not Nellie, he will not try to force Yao onto the perimeter when it is clearly a suboptimal option. If he can average about 11 rpg and be more of a factor on defense (say 2.5 bpg), I think he deserves MVP consideration.

Actually since comeback POY was phased out the most improved award hasn't been well defined. Grant Hill got strong consideration in recent years for the award. It all depends on the voter's interpretation of the award.

trust me, yao will still be a low post presence, but he'll be used more of a passer more and more b/c he's such a talented passer. plus, we have so many athletic guys (tmac, francis, bonzi, james) that it's only fitting to use yao's passing and draw his man out to open up the basket for them to cut.

yao's pts will go down a lil to like 21-22, but his assists will balloon to 4-5 along w/ 11 rebs.

plus, hopefully that will make him fresh going into the 4th.

u don't want yao to be 1-dimensional nor our offense to be stagnant.

i think if steve goes from 10 or 11 points to 17 or 18 points a game, he has a shot.. I'm not saying he will get those types of numbers, but if so, you have to consider him a candidate for Most Improved...

interestingly, Most Improved and Comeback Player are like cousins... once the Comeback Player Award was stopped, the Most Improved Award was invented the following year

For a player to be aligible for the Most Improved Player Award they have to show significant improvement from their previous season(s), no time off from the league is required.

i would have gone in with exec of the year until ainge pulled off the garnett trade...i mean getting two all-stars one of which is a true franchise/HOF/all-time great in one offseason is amazing work. coupled that with that its boston and what that means to the NBA and the media its ainge no doubt.

unless we get a #1 seed in the west and get home-court throughout. when u have the best team in the L, it's easier to get awards eh?
