A social experiment of the Tinman variety. Oh, and it's in the right forum.

Yeah, I'm reading "Closing of the American Mind" right now, and Bloom goes off on this diatribe about music, of which I don't really agree. I'm just interested in which of these bands people will most identify with...

All none of them. I don't associate with any of them. They don't hang out at the same clubs I do.... :D

Perhaps the thread title should read "Which of these Bands/Musicians do you most closely identify with".....

He's making an argument that rock and or roll is vulgar and lowersthe soul's ambitions. This even includes some classical, but not Mozart. It's an interesting argument, but I disagree with him. The rest of the book has been great though.

This experiment is see if political types associate themselves with a certain band, and then what is that band's philosophy. I don't think much of a connection can be made. I think ultimately we just like what we like. For the most part I like all these bands. I just associate with the Pixies kind of disenchanted, yet still trying worldview. I'm like that, but in a much different way.

Of those on the list, I was torn between The Beatles and Zep. I went Zep because I suspect that with lyrics like "'til the juice runs down my leg," somebody like Bloom would think they were the more vulgar.

Vulgar? Lowers the soul's ambition?? I think not.....

    I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are, in case you don't know
I'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset
The light on your door to show that you're home
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
    Please put down your hands
    'Cause I see you
I find it hard to believe you don't know
    The beauty that you are
But if you don't let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness, so you won't be afraid
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
    Please put down your hands
    'Cause I see you
    I'll be your mirror

It has more to do with rythmns and base. He does add that lyrics are the one thing that bring music towards poetry. He likes poetry by the way.

I voted the Beatles because I'm a free spirit and i'm back in the back in the U.S.S.R...

You missed on CRITICAL musician though which I and more sure more members probably associate themselves with.

    And that person is: Bob

Of the options, and considering my musical playing style now (very acoustic), I chose Cat Stevens. (yeah, I also play quite a few of his songs too).

If I was still electric, I'd pick Led Zepplin.

And If I was feeling especially nostalgic, of course the Beatles.

But most of the time just give me some Sinatra and I'll be happy.

I don't keep up well at all with contemporary music, other than what I occasionally listen to on the radio. In college, I went through a long Beatles phase where they were pretty much all I listened to. But, since I was young, I've had a particular affinity towards late 18th, early 19th-century German music. Amadeus remains one of my favorite movies. So I'll vote Mozart.

I hardly think Bob Marley is quite the biggest oversight here when it comes to missing Bobs.
