Okay, here's the question from you draft goorous. Name the one player in this draft whom you think can help make the Rockets a contender. Ignore the place that the Rockets will be drafting. Who can make the Rockets a solid contender in a few years. Is it Kenyon Martin, Chris Mihm, T.M., Porter, Troy Murphy, Barkley, etc.
You already know my answer. KENYONNNNNNN MARTIN. He brings defense and offense. Just what the team needs. He always gives his best and he hates to lose. He is a winner and this guy can help the team.
If the Rockets get the 7th or 8th slot, there is no way they would take a chance on Martin. I don't care what the doctors say, he is going to be looked upon as damaged goods. He did have screws inserted in his foot so I don't believe he will be able to reach his full potential that he had before the unfortunate injury.
I think that Martin can recover from this injury and still be productive. If he's available, I say take him and risk it. Remember no balls no glory. There is a tremendous upside to Martin. This injury can really benefit the Rockets because a lot of teams might just not be willing to risk taking some guy who is questionable (injury wise). Plus, there are some great players still out there. Martin might just be what the Rockets need to build a big contender. C-Cato pf-Martin sf-Rogers sg-Mobley pg-francis This looks like a legit contender. Defense, offense, and the works!!!!!!! And of course the top three reserves off the bench are Anderson, Thomas, and Drew. Only one player away from being a contender?

Endure the losses, go back to the lottery, and draft or trade up for Morris. I know, the idea is totally ill. Till you start thinking about that lineup for the next decade.
Dont feel too bad Will. I thought the EXACT same thing a couiple hours after the Martin injury. Need something for after Dream retires. Man am I greedy.

Dang Will, it's pretty easy to hope that we suck when you don't have to watch the games, isn't it? I thought you only wanted us to suck this year, then start kicking ass next year? Watch these guys play hard every night, then tell me you don't want them to win in the end. Besides, it's tons more fun to drink when you're team's winning. (I know I can't go through this another year.....can you imagine how Celtics fans must feel?)
Freak -- We'd all like to see the basketball equivalent of the Revolutionary War, a ragtag army defeating a great empire. If that happens, great. I'm just not optimistic about it. In '95, we cashed in all the underdog pluck and luck any team could hope for. In the Francis era, I'd prefer to see the Persian Gulf war: overwhelming force mowing down the opposition with methodical precision. As for the losing: I feel your pain. I refuse to tape over even that spectacularly embarrassing Lakers game that NBC mercifully aborted. And remember: If it's hurting you to drink while our guys are losing, you're not drinking enough.
Martin?! Puh-lease... It's all about Stromile Swift. Morris?! No way its DerMarr Johnson. Here is a good question Will. How many college rookies have had screws put in their foot and gone on to become a great defensive player in the NBA? I say great because if we have a high draft pick that we are currently heading for..we better shoot for a defensive gem.
Hmm..... From what I have heard , Morris wont come out. So lets take a look at these 3 players. Stromile Swift - 6'9 , 225 LBS. These are his numbers for the year. Season Average 16.3 PPG 8.2 Rebounds ( 5.1 OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS) 1.5 Steals 2.8 Blocks -------------------------------------------- Dermarr Johnson - 6'9 , 200LBS. Athletic type player. Reminds me of a mcgrady but with a shot. Needs to gain a little more muscle. Season Average 12.8 PPG 3.7 Rebounds 1.0 Steal 1.0 Blocks Numbers might not look all that but trust me this guy can play. You want athletic small forward that is big, cant find better than this. -------------------------------------------- Kenyon Martin - Some say 6'8 some 6'9. I will just say 6'8 1/2. 230 LBS, all muscle. He will probably add 15 or 20 pounds more so his weight is no problem. Season Average 18.9 PPG 9.6 Rebounds ( 2.5 Offensive Rebounds) 1.3 Steals 3.3 Blocks -------------------------------------------- I know more about Martin and JOhnson because I watch them alot. Swift I havent seen alot of but from what I have seen, he looks like he has good talent. So MARCH MADNESS is beginning and its time for us to take a look at all the players for their last games. ITS GOING TO BE INTERESTING TO WATCH!
I was skeptical about Johnson (playing on such a good team and all) but him and Swift are only freshmen. They look like great prospects, and if we don't blow it (make sure we get no worse than the 7th or 8th pick) we would have a very good chance at one of them or Martin (these 3 to me seem most intriging). I am also pretty high on Fizer, that guy seemed to have a much better first step and far more explosive off the groud (more like Barkley-esk) than KT. I haven't seen Morris that much (I did watch some of the game yesterday), but I have to admit he looked Robert Horry slow (modestly quick at best), which isn't exactly what I want for an SF. I have also seen a few Maryland box scores where he didn't do much. I expect a great talent to put up outstanding numbers just about every time he laces them up--the way Fizer and Martin do, unless they are really young. I guess if Morris only 19 or so (I don't know?) I would hold a little more excitement for him.
I like Martin or Fizer but both seem to be top 5 picks. If I had a choice I would pick Fizer because he has the bigger body. If the Rockets can't get one of these guys then they should go out a sign a PF and draft another position. Robert Traylor isn't getting much PT in Milwaukee and should be relatively cheap (trade perhaps). He has loads of talent and plays well when given the opportunity. Speaking of Milwaukee, rumors say Cassell is unhappy...maybe we can get Cassell back.
I would really like it if we got either Martin, Swift, or Johnson... and if it's possible, what do u guys think about tryin' to get Rashard Lewis to come play for his hometown???
I would like to revive this thread and put a little different slant on it. In the past two drafts, I don't see too much past 3, 4 or maybe 5 guys from each draft that could make a difference on the Rockets. There are some other nice players, but not what I think would make a big difference. So, assuming we don't get a lottery pick, are we giving these potential picks down in the 6,7 + spots more credit than they deserve as impact players? Will this draft be that much better than the past two? How do you compare who will probably be available with the last two years drafts? ------------------
My first choice is Eric Meeks. If he is unavailable, I would go for Johnson. He will be a big time player, the problem with him, though, is we will have to wait a while. But not as long as Toronto had to wait with McGrady. ------------------
