I'm a longtime Internet Explorer user but now after all of the security patches that it needs, I'm looking for a faster and secure browser. Do you guys have any browser that you would recommend?
I'll tell you what. I've been trying to use Mozilla, but it's given me some serious headaches. I like the tabbed browsing and it's effective pop-up blocking that's built in, but the thing crashes quite often for some reason. And it doesn't keep cookies as long as I tell it to, either. And I never could get the thing set-up right to launch Windows Media player if I click on a Windows Media link. So, while I'm not a fan of IE, my problems with Mozilla have forced me back to the "Evil Empire".
In Windows, I'm on Mozilla 1.4, but on Linux I've been almost exclusively using Konqueror (upon which Safari is based). The only thing I that's keeping me from fully loving Konqueror is that the tabbed browsing isn't as well done as Mozilla's.
Opera is nice. The banner isn't that bothersome. It's not like it covers up the page you're viewing. Only issues are some plug-in problems, and it sometimes has problems with pages... like ESPN. But, you can simply restart (you *don't* need to restart your computer) and it'll bring up the last page you were viewing, and it's usually fine this time around. And yes, tabbed browsing is the bomb.
Does Microsoft do this on purpose so people will get sick of the errors and switch back to avoid the headaches?
I was using lynx earlier today on a webserver I was setting up. There was a time in college where I totally botched my Xwindows and the only browser I had was lynx -- it really works great if you want to visit a site really quickly and do away with all the extra garbage.
Some of the ads are starting to use audio. one said "Hey Look Up here!". it's pretty damn annoying and startled me since my speakers were turned up. still i love the button on Opera to turn off loading images.
Mozilla use IE only for testing work and for Smeggy and Mrs Smeggy to use. Vengeance, does Konqueror come with the same javascript Debugging Tools. That's crucial for me ever since I've started porting alot of servlet work to the browser. btw: Vengeance...I just blew out an ASUS P3C4x Slot 1 on my Lynux production server. Any ideas where I can get a suitable Slot 1?
As far as I can tell, Konqueror doesn't have any sort of javascript Debugging tools. Javascript actually seems to be its biggest failing right now in terms of rendering. It seems that the effort with Konqueror is to make it the Internet Explorer of Linux. It's integrated 100% with KDE in every facet, and unlike mozilla, they seem to have really focused on making the browser <i>just a browser</i>, while stripping out lots of the stuff mozilla adds. For a Slot 1 motherboard, I thought it would be easier to find one than it has turned out to be. <a href="http://www.axiontech.com">Axion</a> seems to have the best selection here in Houston, but that's pretty sparse, and you're going to be paying out the nose for one with that 133 FSB. What I'd do is one of these two things: 1) <a href="http://www.ebay.com">Check Ebay</a>. I looked and there are lots of auctions for Slot 1 motherboards. Now, I don't know how you feel about buying computer stuff from ebay -- I've never done it, but I know some people who have gotten great deals and one guy who got shafted. 2) Call <a href="http://www.golightspeed.com">Lightspeed</a>. I used to work there . . . The number is 713-664-0002. Ask Mike if he has any used Slot 1 motherboards -- I wouldn't be surprised if he does. If not, he may be able to obtain one for you. He'll always go the extra mile to get something if he has a potential sale. I'll check around and see if I know anyone who has extras, but I don't think so. I'm blown away by how difficult it seems to have become to get Slot 1 mobos. You might be better off (save money) to upgrade to a low-end Athlon or P3 system that takes SDRAM. Even those motherboards are getting hard to come by, but I'd suspect they're easier to find than Slot 1. <i>edit:</i> I just remembered another place that I'd bet dollars to donuts you'll find them: <a href="http://www.epo-houston.com/locations.html">EPO</a>. There are two in Houston -- the one I go to is at Fondren and Westpark. Back in the computer area, they've got a box of older motherboards -- I'd bet they've got a Slot 1 in there. If not, I'm certain they'd have one at the counter, or at least could get you one, probably cheaper than anywhere else. EPO is usually way overpriced in computer stuff, but for something like this, I bet they'd be cheaper.
thx, I was surprised as well. Let me know if you hear of an extra. It would help a bunch. You sent me to lightspeed once before, and they did me well (my mom was the victim of lightning). I remember where it is, but forgot the name. I'll give Mike a call tomorrow.
