    It's good timing on ESPN's part, boston.com is supposed to start charging for online services and that will just push people to ESPN.

    trying to compete with fox sports who've have local sports focus for a while.

    I always wondered why the heck the reputable publications werent charging for their online content from the start? i dont want to pay, but thanks for the 15+ years of free coverage newspaper industry

    Charging for online content has been kryptonyte for online business models for a while now (see internet video, streaming radio/podcasts etc.) That being said, I think eventually when enough of these newspapers fold and all these businesses are forced into the corner, they will band together and figure out some way to charge for their content.

    It makes sense for ESPN to do Boston, Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics, three good teams that are loved locally and focal points for ESPN nationally. They spend so many resources on the Boston teams that they should just launch a site.
