For a leisurely drive, what's an ideal area with some windy, smooth roads? I'm up in the northwest. 290 is a bad answer.

I realize this question is probably insane to most Houstonians ("Why would anyone want to drive for pleasure? confused:), but I've got British blood coarsing through these veins and I've a hankerin'.

I've always liked 105 between Conroe and Plantersville.

I've heard the drive through Highway 6 in Pasadena is pretty breath taking.

Depends on the scenery you like to see while driving.

The Bellville - Brenham area might be what you are interested in and since you live in the 290 area, it would fit.

A bit farther out would be the Columbus - La Grange area.

Areas close to the Gulf of Mexico will tend to be flat........thus not winding.

If somebody responds with I-10 and/or Westheimer, disregard them.

I prefer 225, between 6 and the beltway.

    I concur with Mango.

Around the 290 area, there are some nice winding roads south of Waller and around Prarie View A&M (359 & 362).

1488 between 290 and Magnolia is good also.

If you're driving down Highway 6 through Katy and Sugarland, you can play the classic car game "count the Home Depos and Quiznos"

1488 is a great country road to cruise down. Very smooth road with some good turns and good visibility. But once you hit 290, take a right, head to Austin, and haul ass down 2222.

Drive out to Huntsville. Once you pass Conroe, it's actually pretty relaxing. When you get to Huntsville, there are long country roads a'plenty to drive on with no traffic. Very peaceful.

Various sections of Memorial can be fun at the right times.

I second the motion for HWY 6 through Sugar Land, Mission Bend and up to Katy. Any extra land is being used for more strip malls and new homes. Also, you will see not one, but two giant 0.99 cents stores. The old Kroger on HWY6 @ Bissonet is now a Giant 0.99 cent store, while the old Target on HWY6 @ Bellaire is not "World's Largest 0.99 cent store." Not to mention that in a 3 mile stretch, you'll find 3 Walgreens, 1 CVS, and 1 Eckerd.

If you want Las Vegas style scenery............

try I-45 North between Tdiwell and Parker...........where Matress Mac's place is located.

I call it the LIGHTER, BRIGHTER side of Houston...........:D

That's what I was thinking. I live in Deer Park, which is basically an extension of Pasadena. Highway 6 doesn't run anywhere near Pasadena. I do drive home on 225 everday though. I highly reccomend driving on this highway after dark. With all of the lights from the chemical plants that border the road, it looks exactly what I imagine hell looks like.

Allen Parkway from Downtown to Shepard before you enter River Oaks.

Or Memorial from Downtown to Shepard before you enter River Oaks.

    It's curvy.

I might add this road part here has too many bumps, potholes, and imperfections on the road. I don't suggest it if your car has a lowered/stiff suspension.
