as far as PG's go, is he top 10? top 15? and who would you put in front of him? lets not make this a popularity contest. please try to provide stats that back you up.
I'm not overly big on stats because stats can be deceiving. That being said, I think he is a very solid PG, a upper tier PGs that can pay big dividends in big games. Out West I think he is every bit as good as Tony Parker, is a more well-rounded PG then Terry who scores like crazy but isn't great at setting up offenses. I'm not sure he is that far off of Andre Miller, who has been slipping in recent years. Nash had an MVP year last year, Alston plays defense so that should be interesting. That's depending on whether Alston is as good as last year or if last year was an abberation. I'd like to think that last year was the culmination of him finally getting a chance. The last 2 years are the first years he was actually given starter minutes. And both years happen to be his best years. So I think Alston fits in well among the upper-tier PGs, double-digit scoring, near Top 10 in assists, plays defense and hits shots. He isn't necessarily an All-Star, but he is an outstanding fill-in. I like him.
in my opinion... 1. D-Wade 2. AI 3. Nash 4. Arenas 5. B-Davis 6. Kidd 7. Bibby 8. Marbury 9. J-Terry 10. Billups 11. Stoudamire 12. T-Parker 13. Cassels *14. ALSTON* 15. A-Miller
Alston is better than Cassell and Stoudamire at this point of their careers IMO. Did you forget Steve Francis?
He's a slightly above-average point guard, and that's nothing to dismiss. I'd rank him among the top-half of starting point guards (not including Francis and Wade, who are slated to play two-guard this year). 1. Iverson 2. Nash 3. Kidd 4. Arenas 5. Baron Davis 6. Marbury 7. Billups 8. Bibby 9. Joe Johnson 10. Terry 11. Parker 12. Hinrich 13. Alston 14. Andre Miller 15. Ridnour
he's top 15, maybe top 12. but he has never been the star player, just a damn good PG to run an offense and make plays.
the guy is not a top tier point, other wise it I'm sure it would have taken more than MJ to get this guy. But, he can handle the rock, he can pass, he can shoot fairly well and should shoot better with the open looks he'll get with Yao and TMac, I'm thinking he'll be similar to the player in Miami, except more mature and with winning on his mind instead of getting payed. If he can put up White Chocolate numbers with the Ass / TO ratio... I'd consider him to be a damn good pg for us.
You know what? I think players are only as good as the team that they are playing with...especially PGs. And my guess is Rafer is going to be GREAT here in Houston because of who he gets to play with. I expect like 14pts and 8+ assists from him..... Which would be HUGE ! DD
I don't know if I'd rank Skip ahead of Andre Miller just yet. I guess I would hold this until I see how Rafer plays for us.
Great point! I never thought highly of Nash but after he went to the high powered offense of the Suns as opposed the the single dimension mavs it was a night and day difference. From an above average point gaurd to MVP, WOW.
