Ok, I know there have been a lot of best this or that type threads. I'm specifically looking for recommendations for something relatively quick, cheap, healthy and convenient to the West loop area. Something like a Cafe Express, but that gets old after a while. What's out there that I'm missing?
Paulie's on Westheimer near Dunlavy... very similiar to Cafe Express. Pasta, sandwiches, pizza, etc... Mai's on Milam. The vermicelli bowls are pretty healthy. Mission Burrito on Shepherd near I-10 or on Alabama near Shepherd. Avocado tacos, grilled fish tacos, rice, beans... all that can be healthy. Whole Foods Market on Kirby @ Alabama. Tons of healthy, all natural foods and a new sushi bar with awesome rice and noodle bowls. here... check this place out http://www.b4-u-eat.com tons of Houston restaurant reviews and you can search in your zip code!!
I work in the area deciding where to eat everyday is always a chore. Among my coworkers Eatzi's is a popular choice that offers a wide variety.
Try Beck's Prime Hot dogs. They're the cheapest thing on the menu, and are butterflied and served on a hamburger bun. Very tasty.
I would think... It's mesquite grilled, and you can get it with sourcraut and mustard. Sounds fairly healthy to me, but then again, I have deep fried butter, so what would I know?
Jax Grill at South Rice and Bissonett. Good salads. Southwest salad is pretty healthy with grilled chicken for $ 6.44 with tax. Counter service. Ruggles cafe is around the westheimer/post oak intersection somewhere. There's one in the Rice Village, too. Good salads again. Counter service. You can get some fish tacos near Westheimer and Kirby at either Berryhill or Taco Milagro. That's a little drive away from the loop, but not too far. If you have time to drive, take the Bellaire exit off 59 and go past Sharpstown. Just a little ways further there's a strip center on the right with a Tau Bay (vietnamese) and a Thai Spice express. The combination rice plate at Thai Spice express is really cheap - like $2.95. You get hot, med. or mild curry and a second choice with rice. It's pretty good. A thai beef salad is more on the light side.
Tried Paulie's. The food was very decent. I would definitely go again, though, to someone else who's trying it for the first time: 1) The potato salad has olives in it - yuck 2) Be prepared for awesome 80's slow jazz/rock music
Have you guys tried their cookies? the ones with the icing on top. I'm convinced those are laced with crack. I have to set aside a budget for them.
My only issue with Paulies is that they assume that everything tastes better with mushrooms in it. I hate fungus. Great sandwiches though.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it's at Rice and Bissonnet. My vote for quick and healthy within striking distance from Galleria area is http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv1703.asp This is the only buffet I know of anywhere in the world where the food is actually good. If you go for the first time, when you hear someone at the counter repeatedly shouting something with three syllables with ever increasing levels of annoyance in their voice, that means it's time for you to return to the counter to collect your bread.
