Where does the Ty Lawson trade rank on Morey's rap sheet for highway robbery?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by backwardhead, Jul 22, 2015.

?

Which mugging do you savor the most?

  1. Harden for Kevin Martin

    85.8%
  2. Kevin Martin for (broken down) Tracy McGrady

    4.2%
  3. Vassilis Spanoulis (the Greek Tracy McGrady) for Luis Scola

    6.3%
  4. Other

    3.8%

There's a very good chance that Durant bails on OK. If that happens, there's a very good chance that Westbrook is gone the following year. That would pretty much kill the Thunder. They'd never recover from that. Morey would have obliterated OK from serious contention for years, maybe decades. Yeah, that pretty much ranks number one on his list of conquest. Scola for bird seed would be second. Don't forget that Artest was a solid move, very calculated. IF Yao doesn't re injure himself....

Popovich was doing Scola a solid on that deal. Scola wanted to play in the NBA and the Spurs owned his rights. Scola was at a point where he was going to sign a long term Euro contract (effectively ending his NBA career) or jump to the NBA> Spurs were not going to sign him so they traded him so he could play in the NBA. Don't forget the Rockets took a bad contract back...

Good point George Gervin. Do we know he was doing Scola a solid? Because if he was it makes the deal less savory for me. Just makes me like Popovich more, which isn't hard since he's one of the greats.

Look this is WAY to early - Lawson has to get his ISH straight, this could be Terrance Williams or James Harden, you just never know.

Apples to oranges. Ty is an all-star caliber player.

    Morey is a G.

Lawson's off the court issues need to be fixed, and he has not made an all star team yet.

I agree, it's hard for me to get too excited yet.

Let's see how many games Lawson is suspended and what his punishment is. I'll start to get excited once I actually see him in uniform consistently.

I'm glad people are mentioning Scola, Lowry, and Dragic.

Here's a repost from the thread on how the Mavs went from champs to current situation, comparing Cuban to Morey:

This is really the difference. Morey doesn't just try to hit home runs in free agency, he drafts and makes smaller moves for players and picks that become genuine assets, as well as bides his time.

This could probably also be updated to reflect Lawson. Heck, past moves to get Scola, Lowry, and Dragic could be included, as well as being the one to "draft the Chandler Parsons, not give a max contract to the Chandler Parsons."

That Harden trade is amongst the biggest steals in history. Took us from the 9th seed void to having one of the best teams in the league with a player who is MVP worthy...all for guys that will forever be playing pinball with teams around the NBA.

Lawson is so good that we get him for nothing. The rest of league isn't that stupid. Jury is still out.

Yes, because unless a team wins a ring, a GM is doing a crap job

Whether or not we win a ring with the Harden/ Howard combo (please win a ring!), we are currently contenders, and have an open championship window.
That's all the GM can do - set the table and get everything ready for dinner. Will we eat? I hope so!

But he has assembled the best roster we have had in 20 years - how can one hate on him for that?
Because he didn't treasure role players? And flipped until he got a star? Isn't that kind of the point??

It depends on how well Lawson plays for Rockets. Needed time to see how Scola and Harden would play out as well. Though unlike Harden and Scola, Lawson's game filled out in the NBA in a big role, s so he's a more predictable commodity.

The trade now might not be as big a robbery as it might seem. Some reports indicate Lawson's value got REALLY low to where any kind of first round pick was as much as could be hoped for. Still a great value deal though compared to what Lawson's value WAS before

The main person that should receive credit for the Ty Lawson trade is Ty Lawson himself. There should be a Ty Lawson appreciation thread created for him on ClutchFans for absolutely destroying his value as a result of his DUIs. The only teams that really had interest in him were the Rockets and Lakers. Honorable mention to the bartenders that kept Lawson liquored up as well as the police officers who pulled him over. None of this would be possible without them either.

Harden trade is right behind the Pau for Kwame trade, made by Lakers in the close history that i can remember.
