First of all, please don't turn this into some pissing match about religion.

First on hell. To my understanding there is no concept of hell as we think of it in Judaism. I have heard of the Jewish concept of Gehenom but it is not the kind of fire and brimstone place we envision when we think of hell. It's more of a place for the soul to be purified. Furthermore, I have been told there really isn't a concept of an afterlife in Judaism (which seems to contradict with the whole Gehenom concept). Where does Christianity get it's idea of hell? Is it influenced by the Greek/Roman concept of the Hades underworld?

On the devil, did this concept first appear within Judaism or was it influenced by other faiths in that area? I have heard that the Jews only came up with a concept of a God and Devil after contact with the Persians and their Zoroastrian faith (Zoroastrians having a good god and a bad god).

Then I hear there is no traditional view of the devil in Judaism as there is in Christianity and Islam. If this is the case where does the view of the devil in Christianity originate from?

In the Bible where there is several references to 'burning and gnashing of teeth'.

It's the good book you know.

The fall of Lucifer is written the Book of Enoch in which it depicts Lucifer and his renegades being thrown down by the Archangel Michael and the other angels. For some reason its not in the bible but Catholicism depicts it in paintings. Peoples perception on what Hell is like is basically the majority of what we perceive it being like, since there is very few mentions of Hell in the Christian Bible. And the hoofed goat like devil comes from Christians demonizing Greek belief in their God Pan. Basically using Pan's features of being a hoofed goat-like humanoid and turning him to the Devil.

I think religion has always been about behavior modification; trying to get people to adhere to codified set of ethics that promote the greater good (the process of civilization). But you don't get the carrot without having the stick, you must have negative consequences for bad behavior as well as positive rewards for good.

The idea of roasting for eternity is a pretty strong motivator if you can indoctrinate people with that notion. (Like using the prospect of having 72 virgins at your disposal to motivate martyrs)

Now this stands as the single most-misinterpreted reference to venereal disease. :(

There were no movie studios, publishing houses or moral relativists back then, so science fiction and horror writers had to do something.

That is all good and well but I'm curious about the origins of hell and the devil. Where did these concepts come from?

religion has always been about explaining things, why we're here, who made the earth, etc.

I believe the concept of heaven and hell came from Egyptian myths.

It was just my 'magination, running away with me.

To define"good" you have to contrast it it with evil. To have a hero, you have to have a villain. To elevate an eternal reward you have threaten an eternal torment. And if you've lived in a cave with an open fire, burning in those hot coals is a ready nightmare.

And death has always been a certainty that scares the hell out of people. If you have any compassion for people you want to allay that fear.

All-in-all it's seems a pretty natural, organic path. Even logical once you get past the acceptance of the unknown as truth.

I thought angels/devils it was originally from Zoroastrianism. Then picked up by the Jews then picked up to the Christians who drew a bunch of pictures giving us the images we know today.

I'd bet the Neanderthals believed in benevolent gods and malevolent gods in the sense that they know good things seem to happen and bad things seem to happen without an apparent Earthly cause. They surly knew death was a permanent change and probably were afraid of becoming a meal for hyena's.

The level of consciousness is debatable I guess but the first thinking men probably imagined god.

i believe this is the correct answer. Zoroastrianism is pretty much the origin of today's western religions (christianity, islam, and judaism).

The Republican and Democratic parties. Pick you poison; it is just a matter of whose buddies get the pay offs. Our congress has become a criminal organization. Who speaks for the people?
