When will Deke move to #2 on the All-Time Blocks list?

I decided to make this thread after last night's game when I noticed that Dikembe only needs 11 more blocks to tie Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for #2 on the All-Time Blocks list. He obviously needs 12 to take sole possession of that #2 spot.

So, just to add a little extra intrigue to the whole thing, I figured I'd make a poll and we could see how many of us can correctly guess which game he'll pass Kareem. Remember he needs to get 12 more to pass...

    Hakeem Olajuwon 3,830
    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 3,189
    DIKEMBE MUTOMBO 3,178

In terms of the poll, it would be almost pointless to include the next 2 games since it's basically impossible for him to get 6 blocks per game. He probably has no shot of getting 12 by the 3rd game either, but it's not entirely implausible so I'll start the poll with that game. If you really think he'll get it before then, just post a "write-in" vote. :D

I also wanted this to be somewhat of a Dikembe Mutombo appreciation thread. This may very well be his last season, and when Yao returns his minutes will go down to almost nothing again. The reality is that the next 5 or 6 weeks could be the last we ever see of Deke getting significant minutes in the NBA. I don't know about you guys, but to me he's been an absolute joy to watch the last few games. He may not be able to make a layup anymore, but given the minutes he's still one of the best rebounders and shot blockers in the league. That's nothing short of astonishing for a 62 year old.

    Thanks for everything Deke

    12 blocks to go...

EDIT: ESPN's list apparently hadn't taken Dikembe's 2 blocks from last night into account yet. So he really only needs 12 to pass Kareem, despite my original post saying 14. I apologize to anyone who has voted already, but there's not much I can do about it now. If you really want to change your vote, just make a post saying so. That way we'll all know you got it right (or wrong) despite your original vote.

5 or 6 games and 2 Rockets players will have top 2 all-time blocked shots record.

I think Deke still has 1 or 2 seasons left in his tank.

    great thread!

the dikembe Block Party 06-07 begins!

I put Denver as my answer... 2 blocks a game for the next seven games...

but the best scenario would be at home against the Lakers, with Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the Toyota Center, just like when he was in Houston when the Dream took the all-time record...

Will the Rockets get to hang the banner for Deke after he gets the 14 blocks?
it would be nice if its next to Hakeem's all-time-shot-blocking banner

Wait, from the NBA stats he's got 3178, not 3176. So he only needs 12, not 14 to pass Kareem.

    i put 7 games.

deke's one of the classiest guys in nba history. he contemplated retirement this past offseason so it would make sense that he retire after this season but i can see him getting one more contract just to get more money for that hospital. also he could still be effective for another year or two if he wanted to.

Well if that's the case then I change my vote from Other (12) to 10, against Phoenix on 1/17.

OMG sweet i knew he was close when the season started but didn't know it was this close !!!

I hope he can get that total in a home game so our announcer can mention it to the crowd!!! Or do they do that when something like this happens??? Or will they do it in other arenas?

Looks like you're right. I thought last night during the game they put up a graphic pretty late in the game that said he was 13 behind Kareem. I thought he had already gotten both of his blocks at that point. Then I searched for the all-time blocks list and the list that I posted is what ESPN showed.

I guess I'll go back and edit, and the poll will just be a bit inaccurate. :(

I thought that kareem is the actual blocked shot leader expect it wasn't a stat when he played.

I think Wilt would have been up there with Kareem as well - would be an interesting project for a basketball historian to go back and listen to the tapes of games to try and count up the actual number.
