wow i was just about to start a similar thread, and i barely ever start em. i'll repeat what i said in the game thread: my apologies to phil and jimy for anything bad i ever said about them. cooper is in another league. i can safely and honestly say he barely understands what's going on. just because you were good at swinging a piece of wood 30 years ago doesnt mean you have the brains to manage a team today. and he doesnt. it blows my mind that Jimy Williams was the best manager of him and the 2 following him, but, he was, and i dont think it's even close (please dont respond with our postseason success under garner). to answer your question...mclane is an inept owner, so nothing would shock me. i suspect he'll give him the rest of the year minimum though.
there comes a point when us as fans just have to accept the fact that our players aren't good enough to compete in this league. You can't blame it all on the manager. Face it. This team has terrible starting pitching. An even worse bullpen, and hitters that are afraid of taking walks or trying to work the pitchers. Not to mention we have a bad defense too. There is absolutely nothing going for the astros
In modern times, managers usually don't get canned after only one season. When it does happen, management is usually heavily criticized by the media for being trigger happy. And the Astros haven't had a one and done manager since the 70's. So I actually think Coop gets a 2nd season. BUT The Astros haven't finished in last place since 1991 and the last time we had a manager in their first year with the 'Stros finish below .500 was 1976. And the Astros have never had a new manager finish in last place in their first season. So who knows, it could be enough to make Drayton pull the trigger sooner rather than later.
i agree with you but part of this is fault of the manager... what exactly, will be tough for the front office to decide. manager also puts his players in position to succeed. has cooper done that enough?
I think drayton will wait till atleast the offseason. I actually wouldn't be suprised if drayton gives him one more year.
He'll get one more year after this. He had nothing to work with and I think any manager deservers at least two years.
Is he doing any worse than Garner? Honestly? Garner rode the coattails of one of the best rotations in baseball history to get to the World Series, but overall he constantly pushed the wrong buttons and never had the team playing their absolute best. Cooper seems to be doing fine, he just as a roster full of guys that either aren't good enough or don't care. And as stated, the pitching is lame. Fire Drayton. Evan
I think at the very least, Drayton should evaluate the coaches at the end of season. Take a hard look at how this team is in last place (maybe they won't be at season's end, but it's probably safe to say they'll be at or near the bottom). This team is underachieving...maybe not by a lot, but they are. I don't buy the argument that Cooper has nothing to work with...he has a better offense than Garner had but they still seem to have trouble getting on base; and almost everyone on our pitching staff is throwing below their career average. So take a hard look at these coaches; are they getting the most out of our players?
I think at the end of the year if he doesn't get the team to play better. I liked the Cooper hiring, but the news from the clubhouse is disturbing. DD
Entering into this year, we had crappy starting pitching and a questionable pen. Offensively, we had an above average set of bats, but very inconsistent game to game, maybe relying on big innings too much. Defensively, we were average at best and maybe overrated at that, especially Tejada. Firing Cooper will not fix the team. Once it becomes clear that the season is lost, I do expect the Astros to try and move some of the experienced backup players to playoff teams, which might land some A or AA talent. Cooper will then let the kids play more although he does not have a lot to work with here. Next offseaon, the Astros will attempt to improve their starting pitching by paying through the nose.
I kinda hope he doesn't. I like Cecil Cooper, I think he's doing a pretty good job, and I'd like for him to oversee the rebuilding.
He's too nice to manage and sometimes doesn't pull pitchers quick enough when they are struggling, as was the case last night. However, he doesn't have a good bullpen outside of Byrdak, Geary, and Valverde to really work with. Brocail has been absolutely horrid as of late and was someone we were using regularly with success earlier in the year. WTB Dotel, Lidge, Wagner.
every person he has thrown out there in our bullpen has blown the game in one way or another. It's not like he has much to work with. Let's see, Wright is young, inexperience, has a 5+ ERA. Valverde has blown a few saves, gave up a lot of leads. Brocail gave up a lot of leads, blew one save in Tampa. Borkowski isn't that good anyway. I could go on and on.
Not going to happen. Managers always get too much credit and/or blame for a team's performance. Yes, there are exceptions, but for the most part it's the players and how they perform that determines W's and L's. Treat the disease, not the symptoms.
Garner had a way of getting more out of less. Does anybody remember Pete Munro? Cooper has a way of getting less out of more. Sure the staff is bad, but the offense is underperforming right now. Some key components of the pitching staff is underperforming (see Oswalt, Roy). I have to think that the coaches have something to do with it. It was not necessary to fire Garner last year. I said it then and I'll say it now. They went a long way to fixing what is wrong with the franchise when they fired Purpura.
Ditto. Cooper has managed a team with last-place talent into last place. Let's see Wade get some real pitchers...then we'll see what kind of manager Coop is.
