It will take a very long time before UH has the same national recognition as UT, and to a lesser extent A and M.
i already go there, and am planing on transfering to UT or TAMU(elec eng.), if it becomes tier one, i will not transfer.
a lot of the decision has to do with the strength of UH's individual programs, not just Tier 1 status
Texas only has 3 Tier One universities, UT, A&M, and Rice. They want to catch up to California (which has 9) and New York (7). So they're going to throw research money at a few schools to help them get up there. Those schools would be UH, UNT, Tech, UT-Arlington, UT-Dallas, UTSA, and UTEP. State Congress just passed a bill by a wide margin to create funding to give grants to those 7 schools. But they still have to work it into the budget. It's not a far fetched idea.
Nah... not really. Heard some students talking about how ridiculous the aspiration was and that it would never happen. But they probably aren't following it either. I'm not even sure what constitutes tier 1 I just know which Texas schools are tier 1. Anyways it was a joke! Should have included one of these " "
I read something on their website and it seems like they are pretty darn close. For instance, they have 8 faculty in some scholarly organization, while Tier One schools have at least 5, so that qualifies them in one area.
What are the criteria? Someone just link me lol. Also if it comes to a "UH, UNT, Tech, UT-Arlington, UT-Dallas, UTSA, and UTEP" vs. TAMU/UT I think TAMU/UT would generally win with ease no? They offer the college town experience. I am not sure a big number of in-state students covet a big city experience. You guys from Houston had no desire to leave home? You wanted to stay close to home and partake in the commuter school mentality? It seems like at UT/TAMU that school is your life. For the people I knew that stayed home school was kind of secondary to their routine. Just curious...
Here is the link: http://www.uh.edu/about/tier-one/ Read towards the bottom, titled "How Close is UH to Becoming Top Tier?"
Isn't UT-Austin already a tier 1 university? And if so, why would someone want to go to Houston over UT (if you disregard the relative strengths of specific majors at each school)? As a non-Texan who really doesn't know any better, UT seems like the best choice for having both a fun college experience and getting a worthwhile diploma.
That's the point, people go to UT because of its Tier One status. So if UH reaches Tier One, would people still go? That would put UH in the same neighborhood with UT. I really don't see the point of going out of town just for school. Don't you have better things to do than go to school?
Why UH put a campus in such a ****ty part of town beats me. We could nuke the surrounding area though and rebuild it with how do you say.... better neighborhoods.
Until they can magically take the campus out of the ghetto UH will have trouble being recognized as a tier one.
or which ever school has better academics. UT is arguably top 2... Rice would be the best but we all know that nobody here can really afford 30000 a year..
What's the story with prairie view and a campus on the northwest part of town? They were griping a while back about it stealing their students I believe.
