The World Health Organization recommends breast feeding up until 2-4 years old. I think that has something to do with underprivileged countries.

I actually had a sociology prof who had this as a major study in her course. The early termination of breastfeeding and moving to formula at around 1 year to 18 months is almost a purely western phenomenom. It was her contention that it is the selfish western woman that deliberately quits breastfeeding too soon despite the fact that it is almost always healthier for the child to breastfeed until 2-4 years old. Having said that, it is not my place to judge what a woman chooses to do, and I can't imagine my wife going too long. Seven years is gross though.

I can't remember exactly, but I think I breast fed until nearly 4. My mom was a Lamas class instructor and is now a labor and delivery nurse, and I am her 3rd child. Taking that into consideration, I assume she was more educated on the matter than the average mother, and we all came out fine, so... EDIT: I asked my mom and she said, 3 years not 4.
