I was wondering what you guys think about this. Whenever you feel that the refs make some sort of bad/stupid call, have the Rowdies chant out "Donaghy" over and over. I wonder how effective that would be in regards to future calls.

This kind of novel thinking, only brought to you at Clutchfans! :D

Friend, I think the refs will hear that everywhere and it may be counterproductive, if anything.

If I got a bad call, I'll tell Ref you are wrong. Then send him the taper to prove it. I'll seldomly complain about the borderline calls. Credibility probably is the most important. If you complain about every calls, Ref will be encouraged to call on you with more confidence! However, if you haven't got the call you deserve, Make sure you complain! :D

The Rowdies chanted "FBI ... FBI" a couple times during the preseason.

Every time the refs make a bad call, take a swig of tequila.

Half of the refs broke the rules.... I say let them have it. I don't think they are any good at their jobs anyway.

This is not even funny, not to mention classless.

If you're going to be "edgy" or something, please make me laugh while doing it.

refs are not perfect people they make mistakes every once in a while, but to accuse them of being cheaters every time they do so is a bit cruel, don't you think? oh and by the way you will be giving Donahey too much publicity that he does not deserve.

Oh please. I wasn't trying to be funny. Imagine if they pulled the **** that they did against phoenix when they were playing the spurs....I wasn't trying to be funny, but rather a way to keep out of control bad calls in check.

Did you not forget Dallas 3 years ago? I don't give a **** whether its classless or not. If a ref costs the Rockets a win, the last thing you give a damn about is class.

Are you a pr spokesperson for David Stern? I'm not accusing anyone of cheating, but that very accusation can very well keep a bad ref in check from making stupid calls.

I don't really like it because for more casual fans it just reminds them of the possible tainting of the game...

There was a piece on SLAM magazine where they wrote that whenever a ref made a bad call, people would say he "pulled a Donaghy".

But I don't think you can chant Donaghy in a game, because like David Stern said, that was the case of "an isolated, rogue criminal".

I think you misinterpret the intent. It wasn't to actually accuse that ref of doing something. It's more of a you are making a call so bad, it seems like you are another Tim Donaghy. With that in mind...imagine you are a ref and made a very bad call or no call (like tackling of Yao in Cleveland)....Suddenly the entire Stadium just starts chanting Donaghy's name. I can guarantee you that will have some effect.

First off foo, I don't think you are going to get everyone to chant this especially with the Lexus Lounge crowd in the middle of everything.

You also said that this wasn't meant to be funny, but I don't see any other reason to do it. Obviously the referee on the floor is not Tim Donaghy, so by calling out that name you are trying to create some kind of "clever" connection to him, which is suppossed to be found humorous. Your post lacks that "clever " though, because of the fact that anyone could have posted that but they didn't because it is not funny or clever.

I was in Dallas three years ago during the playoffs. Dallas fans chanted things like this. Dallas fans are the worst fans ever. A bunch of metrosexual, r****ded sh*t talkers. I have never seen so much torn jeans and spikey hair in all my life.

I hate Dallas and I don't want to be like Dallas.

    I hate Dallas a lot.

I don't find it in anyway humorous or "clever". If you read my initial post, I don't see how you would have thought I was expecting it to be funny. I see it as more of taunting the ref for a bad call to influence him to be more fair in the future. We all see bias in NBA all the time and sometimes it is blatently obvious. My hopes in that pointing out Donaghy's name would make him a bit more careful.

You guys really surprise me. It seems like the vast majority seem to think the NBA refs are doing a fine and dandy job of calling the games.

Btw, do all chants have to be funny or clever to be a chant?

A referee who hears this will change the way he officiates games. He will tiptoe around every call because he wouldn't want someone to chant "Donaghy" at him. If that happened, he would probably be investigated for fixing games.

Watch out referees. The Red Rowdies are on to you.

You would be surprised as to how the crowds often influence the refs in calls. Home crowd + superstar = free calls. I remember reading somewhere of an analysis of refs tendencies to call games based on whether it was a home or away game.
