When Larry Meets Landry: Pacers may target Carl

The Indiana Pacers don't look like a team primed to be a major player in the free agent negotiating period that begins today.

After deals with Portland and Toronto that will bring seven players to town, the Pacers appear to be looking to clear salary-cap space rather than add to the payroll.

Two Pacers to follow are Jamaal Tinsley and Shawne Williams, each of whom has been involved in off-court incidents and was the subject of pointed comments recently by team president Larry Bird.

NBA teams can begin talking to free agents today. Signings can start July 9.

This year's free agent crop is void of mega stars, with some teams positioning themselves for 2010's heralded class that includes LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Chris Bosh.

With point guard T.J. Ford and Jarrett Jack coming aboard, the Pacers could consider buying out Tinsley, who has three years remaining at $21.5 million.

A possible free agent target for the Pacers is Carl Landry. The Houston Rockets extended a qualifying offer of $711,517 to the 6-9 forward and former Purdue standout, meaning they have the right to match any offer he receives.

Landry averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds as a rookie and could be enticing to the Pacers, who traded backup forward Ike Diogu.

"We believe a number of teams have interest," Landry's agent, Buddy Baker, said Monday.
