is he still here or did he go to train w/ the Chinese team already?

during the last offseason, he went from 296 to 310. hopefully he can gain 10 pounds of upper body strength and improved conditioning over this summer. we will need a monster year out of him next year..

I heard that he has a month of vacation from Chinese NT responsibilities. But he may cut that short by two weeks because of scheduling conflicts. :(

    MAVERICKS NOTES

Walker says move 'worked out great'

    By Ruben R. Martinez

    Star-Telegram Staff Writer

DALLAS - Mavericks forward/center Antoine Walker knows when trade talk comes up, his name could be front and center.

After the Mavs' disappointing season ended only five games into the playoffs, there is talk of changes, perhaps big changes, for the coaching staff or roster. Walker's contract is appealing to other teams because it expires after next season, and because his minutes and offensive contributions were limited this season, don't expect rumors of Walker's availability to die anytime soon. But Walker said that he isn't seeking a change of address, and that big changes might not be necessary.

"To come here with the talent level they have, I was nervous," Walker said. "I didn't know what to expect. But to average [34] minutes a game was more than what I expected. I think it worked out great. I've been on that island where it was just me and Paul [Pierce] having to do everything to win, and that's not a fun way to play."

The three-time All-Star said this Mavs team deserves another year together. That will show whether Walker truly fits in, or if he needs to find a team willing to let him be the No. 1 or 2 option, as he was in Boston.

A career 20-points-a-game scorer before joining the Mavs, Walker averaged a career-worst 14.0 points this season.

    Jamison not satisfied

Antawn Jamison has hopes for next season. He hopes to be with the Mavs, to improve his game and even crack the starting lineup.

"To be honest, I looked at [coming off the bench] as a short-term thing," Jamison said. "I didn't see it as something I would get used to. My frame [of mind] is to go into next season, work out and get my game right, like I'll be a starter next season. But if I was to stay here and they had me coming off the bench, I would accept it like I did this year and try to win the [NBA] sixth-man award again."

As a starter with Golden State a season ago, Jamison averaged 39.3 minutes and 22.2 points a game. Those numbers dipped to 29 minutes and 14.8 points this season.

"I feel like I lost my mental preparation for the game, my outside shot," he said. "I don't feel good about my game."

    Catching up with China

Mavs assistant coach Del Harris will decide in the next week when he'll travel to China to begin coaching the Chinese national team. Starting June 13, the team led by All-Star center Yao Ming will begin training in North Texas. It has exhibition games scheduled in Fort Worth at TCU's Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, Dallas and Frisco.

    Williams ponders future

After Scott Williams joined the team in midseason, coach Don Nelson said the burly center had a spot on the Mavs' roster next season if he wanted. But as Williams' role diminished with Nelson's late-season move to a "small ball" lineup, the 14-year veteran isn't so sure about returning.

"We'll see what happens," Williams said. "I'll wait until August or September to decide if I want to hang 'em up or keep playing."

    Briefly

    • Rookie guard Marquis Daniels on what he learned about himself this season: "I learned to like hotel food."

    • Don Nelson apparently found a way to ease the blow of the disappointing first-round exit. He had two 12 packs of beer thrown over his shoulder as he was leaving American Airlines Center, and said, "No one wants to party with me, so I'm going to go party by myself."

So he doesn't go back to China AND he gets a month off?

    Sounds good.

I would have been rooting for the Mavs much harder had this crossed my mind.
