When he reaches his ceiling, which player will Landry most be like?

?

At his peak, which of these players will Carl Landry most resemble?

  1. Chuck Hayes: He's old for a rookie and still cannot create his own shot.

Although this question has been posted previously, I thought it would be fun to try it again at this new point in time, since my opinion of him has changed significantly since then as well. And I thought this time it would be fun to attach names to the bland "all-star", "starter", "solid role player" attributions.

I have to admit, at first I knew nothing about him nor saw any of his games in college, except that he was barely 6-9 with shoes. I never though he was going to be a bust or a bad player, and from some videos of him I saw a decent athlete with a good frame with good shooting form and touch for a big guy.
But now apparently he has improved tremendously, and he appears to have also improved on his exposiveness and athleticism, just from watching and if you hold Bill's statement (of him increasing his vert by 4 inches) to be true-this is almost unheard of and a true testament to his work ethic.
Right now from what I've seen of him, he definitely reminds me a Carlos Boozer. Hell, even their shooting form looks eerily similar and the way they both attack the basket. I truly think that if he can work on his post game and continue on improving his defense, he can become a fringe All-Star player (assuming he doesn't sign with a different team by then)

He plays like Amare, not Boozer. Fast, strong, explosive, dunks whenever he can, hits mid range jumpers, but has no post game.

    Poor man's Amare.

He won't be on the Rockets roster by that time.

I remember when Chuck first got into the league he was dunking balls left and right and hitting mid-range Js all the time, just like Landry, cept with better defense.

IDK what happened to him though, Van Gundy stagnated his entire game and now he is a specialist.

I also think Amare-lite. Now, if he develops a post game...

Although from a team standpoint, Landry needs to play better D.

I can't think of a better comparison - his game is seems eerily similar; although I remember McDyess being a bit more dynamic than Landry during his rookie year.

Dennis Lindsey also called him a future All Star back then.

Exactly. If he had Scola post moves... he'd be unstoppable!

None of the above. I say he'll be like Antonio McDyess (Back in his Nuggets days) if he keeps improving.

Landry will be unstoppable if he consistently creates his own shot.

The reason I didn't include names like McDyess and Amare, beyond simple oversight on my part, was that the shorter power forwards were the first ones that came to my mind. I also thought about guys currently in Landry's position, Bass, Millsapp, and Maxiell, but really that would have added nothing to the "Kenny Thomas in his prime" option. Initially that's what I thought Landry would be, but he's just so efficient the one thing you can glean from his performance so far is that he is ready to assume a much much bigger role in this offense. Let him shoot the jumper more, it's a pretty good one. All this in his rookie year. I am confident he will incorporate some post moves into his repertoire as he moves on into his second and third years, and after that it's really just up to the fates how good he becomes. All the ingredients are there.

you're talking about chuck, as in charles barkley, right? i've never seen chuck hayes hit a midrange jumper in the nba, and certainly he's never dunked the ball left and right in his career. the only dunks he's ever had have been off a running start on the break, and we can probably count on two hands the number of dunks he's had in 3 years. and when he first got into the league was only 3 years ago, so its not like it was a long time ago that he used to have all these offensive moves in his repertoire. this is his 3rd year and he's pretty much doing the same stuff he's always done, no more, no less (other than his FT% dropping off horribly). he defends well, gets after loose balls, will make an occasional layup and an occasional hook shot around the basket. but he's never shown the kind of offensive game that landry has in this one season.

When he broke into our system, I do remember Chuck Hayes being more offensively useful than he is now. Particularly on offensive boards and put-backs. He had an incredible PER his first half-season with us, but that was also the time when Yao was injured and we had no shot for the playoffs.
