I did a quick search and I found something that said Lent ended on this Thursday, and then something that said lent ended on Saturday... Then I find this...Click??? Both??? So which is it?
I consulted with some of my Catholic students who say that it ends on Saturday(One of them has a big party planned for the weekend.) Edit: afte rfurther review I found this site that says that it actually ends on Sunday. But there is confusion as to which Sunday. The purpose of Lent is to recognize the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert. And 40 days from Ash Wednesday falls always on Palm Sunday, so theoretically some people stop on Palm Sunday. http://tm.wc.ask.com/r?t=an&s=a&uid...board=Questions;action=display;num=1017202121
My forty days is up on Palm Sunday, that's the pgabriel interpretation, strictly technical. But I think most people consider it Sunday, really after you go to church. So if you don't go, and you gave up drinking, I guess you get no alcohol till next Easter.
Well, being a practicing Roman Catholic, I would think that I would be done sundown this Thursday, but I want to know if anyone has a definitive answer.
Most Catholics I know hold out on lent until Easter Sunday, then (since most kids give up candy or something like that) they get all their Easter sweets and that's to end lent. I don't know the "official" end, but that's when most of my friends end it.
A friend of mine is Catholic and he said friday night was lent. I was like, I get lent sometimes, usually in my belly button. He found that pretty funny. I had never heard of it before, pretty interesting stuff.
Lent ends on Holy Saturday. The Sundays during Lent are NOT counted in the 40 days. Many folks celebrate the end of Lent at noon on Holy Saturday. Holy Saturday is the 40th day of Lent, so others will see midnight Easter Sunday as the end of Lent.
My girlfriend's Greek Orthodox, and she's done with Lent on Sunday, April 28th. They do everything a little bit different, almost like a cult.
George: It’s over. Elaine: What? Jerry: How did you get in? George: Kramer. Elaine: What’s that? George: Lobster. Jerry: Looks like a swan. George: She says we can’t go out anymore. Elaine: Why? George: Because I’m not Latvian Orthodox. Her parents won’t let her get involved with anyone who isn’t Latvian Orthodox. Elaine: Latvian Orthodox? Mmm, it is lobster. Jerry: She’s limiting herself to Latvian Orthodox? Too bad. George: I know. This was the only woman I never lied to. Well that’s not entirely true. Elaine: Mmm, delicious. Jerry: Mmm, succulent. George: She knew I didn’t have a job, she knew I lived at home. Didn’t seem to bother her. I think I could have married this woman.
it's actually the 27th for us Greek Orthodox cult members. And more specifically, it is actually after the midnight liturgy on saturday night that lent officially ends for us.
By the way, for anyone curious as to why the Greek Orthodox church sometimes has a different Easter than other Christians, it's because the Greek Orthodox doctrine requires the Jewish Passover to be completed before Holy Week and Easter can be celebrated. Sometimes it falls on the same Sunday as the rest of Christianity, like next year, and sometimes it doesn't.
