I'm looking to play golf this weekend with some friends and I'm hoping to try a new course. We normally play Sharpstown because it's in decent shape, reasonably priced, and usually isn't too terribly crowded. I'm looking for something under $50 that is fun to play and where I won't be the only terrible guy on the course :) . I thought about Memorial, but from what I've read it gets pretty packed. Looking for suggestions, thanks.

To get on memorial, you have to register for the "lottery", and it does get crowded on the wknd and not worth the price IMO...

Not sure what part of town you will be in, but I have played at The Battleground, which is in deer park I think? It's a fun course, GPS on the carts, not too difficult and very reasonably priced at like 30 bucks via www.golfnow.com

Venture out to some areas NW and N of town. Lots of good deals out here and the courses tend to be not as flat as those farther south.

Check golfnow.com and you can get some cheap green fees.

If you are willing to drive, I would recommend Longwood in Cypress (cheap), Houston oaks (not so cheap), Woodforest (expensive, but hands down the most beautiful course in the SE Texas area IMO) or Blaketree (great course, very challenging; pretty close to the Ren Festival in Magnolia).

Yeah I actually grew up in Deer Park and have played Battleground a few times. It is a great course. What about Hermann or Glenbrook?

I golfed for the first time today at the Kingwood country club. Tournament was 408 players on 3, 18 hole courses. It was me and another guys first time golfing, I hit two houses, but the course was absolutely beautiful. I was warned by another friend who was with us that golfers are assholes. This is very very true.

I would def avoid hermann...never played it on the wknd, but not even worth the 15-20 bucks during the week IMO..

Southwyck is good, definitely a unique feel for around Houston (and very reasonable prices). Clear Creek is another good deal.

STAY AWAY FROM HERMANN PARK! But Gus Wortham is a decent track for the cheap price.

    Memorial is a bit overrated.
