I don't care if they're old or not. They just crack me up. "John Stockton, not just a great player, but one of the greatest stories of western civilization"--Bill Walton
"The Phoenix Suns should take a look at themselves in the mirror and realize that they are nothing but a disgrace to the game of basketball." During one of the later games in the 95 playoffs when Suns were about to blow it to the Rockets after being up in the series.
In the Rockets championship days, Elie was shooting that running shot in the lane & after about the third attempt he hit one & Walton says "I think that is the shot he is looking for"........kind of in disbelief. Funny stuff! Anybody else remember that one?
hands down it was in a game in the 2001-2002 season when Collier and Langhi were thrown into a game against the clips: it was something along the lines of this: "oh! jason collier with a perfect outlet pass...reminscent of Rockets great hakeem olajuwon" "oh my goodness! jason collier and dan langhi! bringing back memories of the rockets' glory days of clyde drexler and hakeem olajuwon!"
2000-2001 season....... LAC playing in the last weeks....and playing fairly well in the game. Bill; The Clippers are driving toward the playoffs Ralph Lawler; uh, Bill, the Clippers were eliminated weeks ago Bill; What about an at-large berth, Ralph?
The best part about Waltons' comments, especially of the " The greatest single ___________ in the history of basketball!" variety, is that people who don't watch him much think he's serious, and freak out about what an idiot he is. I personally think he's hillarious in short doses, ok in more...but I hated the combination of him and Snapper Jones...Walton would make a statement, sometimes serious, sometimes joking, but either way Jones would feel the need to challenge each and every single thing coming out of Walton's mouth...Now Jones has decent basketball knowledge, but you'd never hear it because his position on everything would immediately be reduced to the exact opposite of whatever Walton had just said...used to drive me batty. Walton could get annoting, but Jones made me mute the games at times, I swear to God.
Branching off of what MacB said, I thought it was hilarious during a nat'lly televised game this year when Walton goes, "Eddie Griffin just took the worst shot the Houston Rockets franchise has ever seen." I also find it humorous when he says "The grace, the fluidity of ____________'s game is a force to be reckoned with.
The exaggerations are due mainly to his enthusiasm for the game. He gets so caught up in the moment that it assumes historical significance for him, even if it's just a Wolves-Blazers game in January. After Mo Cheeks bailed out the teenager who froze up singing the nat'l anthem, Walton said (on Dan Patrick), America is a better place for what Maurice Cheeks did that night. I totally agree about the lameness of pairing Snapper with Walton; regrettably, it looks like they are trying to engineer the same dynamic with Tolbert.
Unfortunately, there are many that think Walton is annoying. He has never been more fun to listen to like he has this year. His sarcasms and other exaggerations are funny.
I used to hate Walton when he was on NBC during the Rockets' glory days. But now I find that he's the most entertaining commentator. One funny moment: When they were doing a pregame show on ABC this season Tolbert and Walton were going at it as usual: Walton: C'mon Tom. I think you need to brush up on your history. I think you need to look it up in the record books. and Tolbert, a man of many words, just says: 'No' hahahahah..well I thought it was pretty funny.
Please.......the DUO of Snapper and Walton was perfect. Walton would just be Walton, and Snapper would often argue with what he said.....but NOT every time as some of you make it seem. Add in Marv, and you had an excellent group for the playoffs. Tolbert.......who the Fvck is Tom Tolbert?
Nets down by just 7 points with 9 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. Bill Walton proclaims that the Nets need to call a timeout because "Their Championship aspirations are slipping away." Bill, there is nearly a 1/2 hour left of ball to play.
