i think he will be a very good spot up shooter, and a very good defender. it seems that he is the ideal JVG PG. that leaves me to believe that he will be charlie ward (in wards prime), but much more athletic.
What do you expect Luther Head can do in this league say after 2 years of playing in the NBA. Since I saw the guy played in NCAA, I would select option 1. Here is the options: 1. Nice solid STARTER for years to come ( as a PG or SG) 2. Solid contributor off the bench (only as a backup PG) 3. Very important part of Rockets team only after TMac & Yao 4. A Bust.
The next McGrady...........J/K He should be able to provide defense off the bench and maybe a little scoring. Maybe, if he improves, be a 6th man off the bench after a season or two. Who Knows?
Just pure guessing is fine. I am pretty sold on Luther Head because he has the atheleticism, mental toughness and the skills to be really important part of Rockets team, and I'm sure that's one of the reason CD picked him, to get younger and more athletic. I remember the title game against UNC, Luther Head is the only player that keeps attacking even though everyone else is giving up. I remember Illinois almost come back to tie the game.
A quicker, smarter version of Bob Sura with better defense and better 3pt shot. Great to have as a backup pg or maybe even start. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if he ended up like Reece Gaines. Which would suck.
I don't expect Head to get much playing time at all. I hope I am very wrong, but I don't see him being better than Lue or Gaines at this point. Gaines was a really good scorer in college and played devastating defense, Reece was much better in college than Head ever was. Look what happened with Gaines. I don't see where Head will fall in the rotation. Backup PG? That's where James comes in. Backup SG? Is he better than Jon Barry?
Head has confidence which is very important for a non lottery pick. If he's as good as advertised I see him as a solid backup or even a starting pg someday.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=5109 just read on one bio that he had 25 assists in a high school game. i know its just high school but it is pg experience. he only went to sg in college. i think he will do very well. francis's physical ability without the stupidity. i know iknow thats mean. but ive watched the rox since the twin tower days up until about 1999-2000 thereabouts. it was too heartbreaking to watch with all those frickin turnovers. but mcgrady brought me back.
I think Derek Fisher can be a close model as to how Head's career can play out. Both taken at No.24, Head has the potential to be a point guard like Derek Fisher, or even better with more size and athleticism. By all accounts, a pesky defender, constant hustler, spot up outside shooter and a hard nosed player who can step up during crunch time isn't out of reach for Head. Derek Fisher: Named 1995-96(his last year in college) Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year after averaging 14.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 5.1 apg for Arkansas-Little Rock. Luther Head: Head averaged 15.9 points, 4.0 boards, 3.8 assists and 1.72 steals as a senior on a club that went 37-2. Fisher is never a big assists guy, averages only 3.1 apg over his career. However, he protects the ball well with only 1.2 Tos a game. That's IMO the most important thing Head needs to do playing pg with T-Mac and Yao, protect the ball and cut down on TOs. Head to T-Mac and Yao can be what Fisher was to Kobe/Shaq. Deliver the ball and get the hell out of the way while capitalizing on open looks and defending the perimeter. With his size and athleticism, Head has the chance to play an easier game by scoring on the break and finishes around the basket more. Hopefully Head has the chance to prove himself and realize his potential.
