After posting an article on obesity and considering that Houston is not the lightest city in the USA, I was wondering what everyone's BMI is? Here's a calculator. BMI Calculator I have a BMI of about 21.6.
Mine is 25 which according to that thing, I am overweight. But I am also 6 feet 2 inches and 195 pounds. I read an article where that calculation would render about every player in the NBA in the overweight category or worse - same with NFL offensive lineman/defensive lineman and pretty much all running backs and wide receivers. It is flawed to use that because it doesn't take into account the muscle that makes up a person's mass.
Put it to you like this - input 7 feet 6 inches tall and 296 pounds and tell me what it computes. That right there tells one that it is not a logical way to figure out if one is obese or not.
Yeah, but the average American sitting at home on his ass eating potato chips and watching the Eastern Conference Finals is not the size of an NLF linemen or NBA player. I think it works for the vast majority.
Okay at my current overwieght number of 205 I am a 27.8 At the what i consider my normal wieght of 190 im at 25.8 (still overweight) They are telling me that i have to be at 180 for my height of 6 feet is borderline healthy....i guess they want me to look like rip hamilton. Like others have said this doesn't account for the fact that muscles wieghs more than fat...someone can be 5 feet tall and be a body builder and weigh 200 pounds and it would say they are overwieght. Remember when they used this against football players and it said like 50% or something are overweight according to BMI...it's bogus to me and i wouldn't use it.
You guys can't compare yourselves to athletes! They weigh a lot because of their blessed body type and immense muscle load. Unless you too are an athlete, you can't use that excuse. BMI is acceptable for the average majority. I personally feel 25-30 is ok in real life, but if you are over 30, you need to trim down. And yes, 25-30 is considered 'overweight' medically speaking. It's just a classification.
From what I've read, BMI was never meant to be used in isolation, because of reasons including the ones you guys are bringing up. I think at the least it was meant to be used in conjunction with waist size.
You know, I met Trader_Jorge in person and he looked like a guy who works out but also a normal sized guy. I would be curious to see what his BMI is. I am guessing it is at least 25.
