i must say that i had the absolute best first date of my life last week. i've done a variety of things on first dates, including operas, dinners, bars, clubs, picnics, coffeehouses, etc. this time around i did something completely different: NEW ORLEANS! three days in the big easy with a woman you've never been out with before is absolutely exhilerating! we split the costs, and had an absolute blast! what has been your best first date?
uh, i did say the best first date. seriously, though, i recommend going on a vacation for a first date. the plane ride was ~90 minutes (not counting connection time between flights), which is just enough time to get a few drinks in and get to know each other. by the time we got to the hotel, we were, um, "ready". after a couple of hours, we were ready to hit bourbon street, french quarter, etc. it was fantastic.
Are you talking about strictly an arranged "first date", or can it be something you sorta fell into... meeting a person by chance and ending up spending part of an afternoon, the evening and the night with. Would that count as well?
either or. mine was obviously planned, but "chance first dates" are great, too!! the hardest, well, "most difficult" thing for me was resisting the temptation to take her out before our departure date. but, i wanted it that way. the way i saw it, if i found out she was a psychotic b**** before we left, i'd be lamenting the trip. but, if i found out after we were there, what the hell, we're already in new orleans. i'd just make the best of it. as it is, we've gotten very, uh, fomfotable with each other.
Edit: I just noticed you split the costs, sounds like you had a great time, I wrote something about setting her expectations to high, but since you split the costs that's a moot point.
I had some of those, one with my future wife at the '74 Willie Nelson 4th of July Picnic, when she went with me on an impulse (she had just moved into the house in front of my garage apt. and had a boyfriend) and, uh... the rest is history. That's not the time I was thinking of, however. It was at "the turn of the tide", as Gandalf would say, at the beginning of the '70's. I had gone to a free Pink Floyd concert at a beautiful park in Amsterdam with a guy I had become good friends with. The place was filled with thousands of people, as you can imagine. America opened (not my favorite group, but when you're waiting for Floyd, who cares?) and played their set. While they were setting up for Pink Floyd, the sky opened with an amazing deluge. Almost everyone waited it out for a VERY long time. It wouldn't stop. Finally, to the boos of everyone... who didn't care about a little (OK, a lot!) thunder, lightning and RAIN, they announced that Pink Floyd wouldn't be able to play. So some tens of thousands of people start leaving, rain still pouring, and my buddy and I got on a streetcar. We didn't pay (I never did) and were standing in the aisle with our eyes open for a person getting up and leaving at a stop. Pretty soon, we both noticed this absolutely gorgeous Dutch blonde, soaking wet from the concert, sitting by the window next to a 250 lb. lady. The lady got up at a stop and I was just a LITTLE faster getting to the empty seat than my buddy and about 5 other guys. We got to talking (she spoke better english than I did) and it turned out that she was from out of town... from a little ancient town on the outskirts of A'dam. I talked her into getting off with us in the center of the old part of the city for some beers and it turned into one hell of a night. We ended up having a long relationship (met her parents, who were about to leave on vacation... thank god! leaving her alone at home!) and got very close. I still think of her... sometimes. There's a lot more to it, but I've gone on too much already. (hope my wife doesn't read this!)
