Im in Williamsburg, VA and its been snowing for 2 days now. we have a unit like this at our apartment My heater has been on for about 2 days STRAIGHT and we have the thermostat at 75, the temperature on the control says its 71-73 in here. So I go outside, and our unit is the ONLY one that is on, and its the ONLY one thats completely covered in snow/ice. Why would mine be the only one like this???? Maintenance is off tomorrow too so damn it!
I am no expert but that is a picture of your AC. The heater would not be outside. The furnace is usually located in the attic (or basement). It's probably bigger than your AC unit and if its gas powered it should have a gas line running to it. Maybe your thermostat is broken so your AC is running instead of the heater.
That's your air conditioner. It's a good thing that it doesn't come on, when your heat is turned on. You must be young.
I read a little bit too fast. You say the heater has been on for 2 days straight. Yuu also say that your AC unit is the only AC unit that is on. Are you saying that the AC and Heating units are running at the same time?
Does your thermostat have a switch between heating and cooling, or is it auto? If it is auto, can you switch to just heat?
see those rocks. i would throw those rocks at the unit. just do that for a while and see if anything happens.
dude, the aliens just switched your heater to an a/c unit! ok, seriously. you probably just need to switch the thermostat from cooling to heating.
im no expert, but i recently bought a 40 year old house and have had some a/c issues so i learned some things i previously didnt know. yes, that is your a/c unit (furnace is inside) - but it is odd that it is covered in ice and that it is the only one running - first, as mentioned verify that it isnt user-error (check your thermostat settings). if your settings are correct than there might be a leak in your compressor. i dont know how that correlates to your heat issue, but over the summer i had a leak in the freon line running into the a/c unit and it caused ice to build up/cold condensation - is the air blowing out of the top of the a/c unit warm or cool? your heater is running constantly and it wont heat up to what you want - why dont you turn it down to 70-72 - is the air blowing out of your vents even warm? if not, you might as well turn it off.
Open the grey box on the wall in your picture and turn the breaker off. Call Maintenance. Start trying to find money for your next electric bill, it is going to be a doozie!
Man, you're electric bill is going to be outrageous if your heater has been running that long (assuming it is electric). I know it's cold but 75? That seems like the equivalent of us in Houston keeping the AC at 65 in the summer.
